European Siemens Vectrons
The Siemens Vectron has rapidly risen to become a dominant cross-border locomotive platform in Europe since its introduction, largely replacing its successful predecessor, the EuroSprinter family. Its success is primarily attributed to its modular and highly versatile design, which allows it to be easily configured for different European railway systems.
This includes:
Multi-System (MS) Capability: The most popular variant, the Vectron MS, can operate under the four main electric power systems used in Europe (1.5 kV DC, 3 kV DC, 15 kV AC, and 25 kV AC), making it ideal for seamless cross-border services without requiring locomotive changes.
Modular Design: The standardized base design allows for easy adaptation or upgrade with various national train control and protection systems, including the latest European Train Control System (ETCS) Baseline 3, often making them approved for operation in up to 12 or more countries.
Variety of Configurations: The platform offers different versions, including AC-only (Alternating Current), DC-only (Direct Current), Diesel (DE), and Dual Mode (electric and diesel-powered), catering to all types of rail operations (freight and passenger) and non-electrified lines.
Siemens Vectron has achieved significant milestones. Siemens has sold 2700 locomotives of the Vectron family, and has manufactured 1750.
This gallery displays the sheer variety of liveries and operators using the class in Europe.
