The Postal Museum & Mail Rail

The Postal Museum in Clerkenwell offers a fascinating look into the communication network that has connected Britain for over 500 years. Spanning two sites on Phoenix Place, the museum tells the story of how mail evolved from elite messenger services into a global system. In the main galleries, you can explore five centuries of history, from seeing a full sheet of the world’s first adhesive postage stamp, the Penny Black, to discovering the unusual vehicles used for delivery, including horse-drawn coaches and five-wheeled cycles.
The highlight of the visit is Mail Rail, a subterranean narrow-gauge railway that operated deep beneath London’s streets for nearly 80 years. This automated electric railway was designed to bypass city traffic, moving millions of letters every day at its peak. Visitors can now board miniature trains for a 15-minute journey through the original 100-year-old tunnels. The ride features theatrical projections on the station walls that bring the history of this "ghost mail" network back to life. Whether you are interested in the engineering of the underground tunnels or the personal stories found in centuries of letters, the museum captures the massive scale of human connection in a truly unusual setting. Farringdon is the nearest mainline station within walking distance of the museum, and Russel Square is the nearest Tube Station.
