Zürich Tram Network
The Zuircht tram network is vast and is owned by the city of Zurich and operated by Verkehrsbetriebe Zürich (VBZ). The network standardly operates 15 core routes. The physical fleet is heavily standardized around metre-gauge tracks and 600V DC overhead power supply. The city operates various tram types: Tram 2000: These reliable, high-floor models have formed the historical foundation of the fleet for decades. Many units feature a customized, low-floor middle section known locally as the "Sänfte" to improve accessibility. Bombardier Cobra: Introduced in the early 2000s, these distinctive multi-section vehicles are completely low-floor and feature custom adaptations unique to Zurich's tight urban turns. Alstom Flexity: These are the network's most modern rolling stock. They feature a 100% low-floor profile, advanced obstruction-detection systems, and high capacity. They are actively replacing the older high-floor Tram 2000.
