The Moon at the Minster
Taunton Minster with the help of Somerset West and Taunton Council, hosted the world-famous Museum of the Moon artwork by Luke Jerram. A six metre model of the Moon, featuring detailed NASA imagery to replicate the lunar surface, will be displayed in church from the 18th – 31st March 2022. As the Museum of the Moon tours internationally it highlights local stories and beliefs about the moon and the wonder of space science
The Earth at the Minster
Following the success of Museum of the Moon that was exhibited in March 2022, Luke Jerram’s sister sculpture, “Gaia” was displayed at St Mary Magdalene Church, Taunton between the 14th April and 1st May 2023.
Gaia (In Greek Mythology Gaia is the personification of the Earth) is a touring artwork by UK artist Luke Jerram. Measuring six metres in diameter, Gaia features 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface. The artwork provides the opportunity to see our planet on this scale, floating in three-dimensions.
The installation creates a sense of the Overview Effect, which was first described by author Frank White in 1987. Common features of the experience for astronauts are a feeling of awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment.
