BRM596 - Cumberland - Photographic Charter
Cumberland Motor Services had an all Leyland fleet until the end of the second world war when Bristol's gradually took over. 291, BRM596, is a 1936 Leyland Titan TD4 which in 1948 received a new ECW body similar to that fitted to a number of Leyland Titan PD1s at that time. Indeed the only clue to the real age of the bus is the short pre-war radiator. The bus is now owned by Steve Morris (formerly Quantock Motor Services) and is kept in stunning condition. On the 4th June 2024 I joined a David Williams photographic charter making rare use of a double-decker heritage bus for a days photography in the Westcountry. Our day started at Langley Marsh, before visiting Wiveliscombe and Wellington posing the bus in scenes which have changed little to keep with the period theme of the 1950's.
Taunton Heritage Bus Day 2024
The Taunton heritage Bus Day returned to Taunton after a seven year absence on Sunday 2nd June 2024. Run by the Thames Valley and Great Western Omnibus Trust the 2024 event featured over thirty heritage single decker, double decker and open top variants. The tickets are valid for use with Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, Cross Country, East Midlands Railway, Great Western Railway, London Northwestern Railway, Northern, Transport for Wales, and West Midlands Railway. On the 10th and 11th April I took a two day trip to the area to travel around the Midlands and explore. The trip also fell on the last week of full operation of Class 323 units on the Birmingham Cross City route, before new CAF units were introduced.
West Midlands Metro (UPDATED)
The West Midland Metro operates between Birmingham and Wolverhampton on a mixture of street tracks and dedicated rail tracks. The service is owned by Transport for West Midlands but operated by National Express. The line first opened in May 1999 using the former Birmingham Snow Hill to Wolverhampton Low Level lines. It originally terminated at Birmingham Snow Hill. However a recent plan of track/ network extensions has now bought the tram into the heart of Birmingham. Further investment and expansions have taken the tram network to Edgbaston (running on battery power from Grand Central). When the line first opened it used a fleet of 16 AnsaldoBreda T-69 Trams from Italy, but the recent upgrades to the route have sew a new fleet purchased and introduced.

On the 7th and 8th March I embarked on a two day trip to explore both Liverpool and Manchester using rail travel, rover tickets from the perspective of both a rail interest and tourist. The trip itself was planned in January taking advantage of the UK Rail Sale which provided thousands of rail tickets at discount prices across the UK, this coincided with a Travelodge sale which provided cheaper accommodation for a one night stay. The aim of the trip was to explore the unique Merseyrail Network, Manchester Metrolink and explore both cites starting with a drive to Stafford to start the trip.

London Railways - 21st February 2024
London contains a wealth of transport interest with countless locations and routes to explore using the Day Travel Card, and Oyster. The city offers many busy commuter and freight routes which can be explored using both underground and overground transport links. I visited London on the 21st February 2024 to ride the newly introduced SWR Class 701 'Arterio' units. After four years in storage owing to handover and acceptance issues the sets were operating a limited service for passenger use, driver training between London Waterloo and Windsor Eton and Riverside. During the afternoon period we travelled to Headbolt Lane (located adjacent to the West Coast Mainline within London Overground boundries.

London Railways - September 18th 2023
London's Railways like the city itself is colourful, full of variety and interest. On the 18th September I visited the Capital for the first time in three years, taking an anti-clockwise route around the city to record the latest changes to the London railway scene. Locations included London Paddington, Denmark Hill, Stratford, and Lea Bridge, as well as some tractional sight seeing along the way (covered in other galleries).
Londoner Buses - Heritage Route A
Londoner Buses (part of Transporagroup) is a new heritage bus service operating in London on a circular route from London Waterloo through Westminster to Piccadilly Circus. The route is known and operated as Heritage Route A. Originally the timetable was lunched with a 15/20 minute service but on the day my visit the timetables had been revised to a single bus operating an hourly schedule. I traversed part of the route on foot to capture the bus at famous landmarks throughout its route.

Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Railway - Diesel Gala July 2023
The 7th - 9th July saw the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Railway hold their annual Diesel Gala Event. The line has a good selection of heritage diesel locomotives which are well cared for, the added bonus of a purpose built diesel shed allows the locomotive paintwork to stay in excellent condition. A single visiting locomotive No.D7569 (25309) from the Waterman Railways Trust was also a nice addition to complement the other Sulzer locomotives staring at the Gala. While the Friday for the event was bathed in glorious sunshine, Saturday was a little more humid and changeable, culminating in an evening thunderstorm.
The Diesel Group workshops were open to allow visitors to view work on Class 26 No.26043 and former French Class 20 No.20228 both of which are currently under restoration.

PS Waverley - June 2023
PS Waverley is the last seagoing passenger-carrying paddle steamer in the world. Built in 1946, she sailed from Craigendoran on the Firth of Clyde to Arrochar on Loch Long until 1973. Waverley is powered by a three-crank diagonal triple-expansion marine steam engine built by Rankin & Blackmore, Engineers, Eagle Foundry, Greenock, Scotland. It is rated at 2,100 IHP and achieved a trial speed of 18.37 knots (34.02 km/h; 21.14 mph) at 57.8 rpm. Passengers can watch these engines from passageways on either side of the engine room. CalMac withdrew Waverley after the 1973 season.A public appeal was launched to secure funding for the return of the Waverley to service and the fund-raising operation was successful. Waverley underwent a £7m two-phase Heritage Rebuild in 2000 and 2003 at the shipyard of George Prior Engineering in Great Yarmouth, funded principally by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The substantial work included two new boilers, improvements to meet modern safety standards and to returning the ship to her original 1947 livery.
Waverley returned to the Bristol Channel for the first time in five years in 2023 for a month long visit

Southampton Marine Traffic - May 2023
Southampton is an incredibly busy port location for Marine Traffic with good viewpoints from both the Southampton and Hythe sides of the Southampton water. With regular traffic to and from the Isle of White, Container Ships visiting the port of Southampton Maritime, Cruise Ships arriving and departing for International destinations, and multitude of other marine craft.
I visited Southampton Maritime, Hythe Pier and Calshot Castle on the 27th May 2023 to view some of the interesting and varied traffic during the afternoon/ early evening period.

Hythe Pier Railway
Hythe Pier stretches 700 yards (640 m) from the centre of Hythe to the deep water channel of Southampton Water, making it the 7th longest pier in the British Isles. It is approximately 16 feet (4.9 m) wide, and carries a pedestrian walkway and cycleway on its northern side and the Hythe Pier Railway on its southern side. During normal high tides the pier is 4 feet (1.2 m) above the surface of the water. A company was formed to construct a pier in 1870 and in 1871 it obtained an Act of Parliament in order to do so. This effort then stalled and a pier was not constructed. A second company called the Hythe Pier & Hythe & Southampton Ferry company was formed in late 1874. A new act passed parliament in 1875 but legal disagreements with the Southampton Harbour and Pier Board delayed royal assent until 1878. Construction started in 1879 and the pier opened on 1 January 1881 having cost £7,000 to construct.

'Lady of Legend' - 27th April 2023
As part of the West Somerset Railway Spring Steam Gala Weekend, a small evening photographic shoot was organized as part of the 2023 Gala. The location was Minehead Station. While the shoot wasn't the most 'authentic' because of the amount of clutter in the Minehead yard area, I worked hard to try to create images which cut out as much of more modern scenes as I could. No 2999 ‘Lady of Legend’ is a recreation of the Saint Class locomotive. The gap in the ‘line of succession’ created by the absence of a Saint in the GWS collection was identified early in the Society’s history and the Centre has long held an ambition to create a working Saint to help demonstrate the GWR story to its visitors. That ambition came to fruition in 2019 with the completion of a project, 45 years in the making, to build locomotive 2999 using parts from 4942 ‘Maindy Hall’ (one of the classes developed from the Saint design)
'Gaia' At the Minster - April 2023
Following the success of Museum of the Moon that was exhibited in March 2022, Luke Jerram’s sister sculpture, “Gaia” was displayed at St Mary Magdalene Church, Taunton between the 14th April and 1st May 2023.
Gaia (In Greek Mythology Gaia is the personification of the Earth) is a touring artwork by UK artist Luke Jerram. Measuring six metres in diameter, Gaia features 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the Earth’s surface. The artwork provides the opportunity to see our planet on this scale, floating in three-dimensions. The installation creates a sense of the Overview Effect, which was first described by author Frank White in 1987. Common features of the experience for astronauts are a feeling of awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment.

The West Coastway Line - 8th April 2023
The West Coastway line is a railway line in England linking the conurbations of Brighton/Hove/Littlehampton and Southampton/Portsmouth, with 1.3 million people between them. It has short southward branches to Littlehampton and Bognor Regis, which offer direct services to and from London.
The purpose of my visit to the area on the 8th April 2023 was to record the elderly former British Rail Class 313 EMU's which were due to be taken out of service in May 2023. The units first arrived on the West Coastway in 2012 and have operated stopping services along the route for the past eleven years operating alongside newer Class 377 Electrostar units, some of which they replaced to release more Electrostars for use on London commuter routes.

Swanage 'Winter Warmer' Gala - 7th January 2023
The Swanage Railway hosted a small gala event on the 7th/ 8th January 2023. 'The Winter Warmer' was a first for the line, featuring a timetable of half steam and half diesel. With Network Southeast Class 50 No.50026 resident on the line it made a great way for the line to host a small post Christmas Gala without the costs of bringing in an visiting locomotive from elsewhere. Two train passenger operation and a goods train allowed four locomotives to operate. Loocmotives featured at the event included:

Yeovil Junction & Westbury - 22nd September 2022
On Thursday 22nd September I made a short trip to Yeovil Junction and Westbury. The purpose of the trip was to record the Network Rail New Measurement Train operating in the Yeovil area, where it had to carry out a rare manoeuvre to stable. The line west of Axminster was closed due to engineering work, so the NMT was unable to carry out its full testing diagram, the set stabled at Yeovil before picking up its booked path.

Dawlish and Teignmouth Sea Wall - 10th September 2022
The Dawlish and Teignmouth 'Sea Wall' section of the southwest mainline has seen huge changes in recent years with major sea defence works carried out at the central Dawlish Section following a major breach of the line 2014. With further work due to start in the Teignmouth area I visited the classic stretch of coastline on Saturday 10th September to record some of the scenes before more changes and constructed to protect the railway and cliffs faces from further erosion and collapse.
The weather during the morning period was excellent for September and my visit also coincided with a visiting steam charter from Saphos Trains hauled by 'Brittannia'

The event was opened at 10am by Dragons Den (and local business woman) Deborah Meaden, and featured various events in the main arena throughout the day, as well as musical entertainment in the main band stand, including the Military Wives Choir. At 14:20 in the afternoon The Red Arrows also provided a flypast over the park.
Scottish Leylands in the Westcountry - June 2022
The 28th June 2022 offered the chance to enjoy an enjoyable day of photography using two 1930's buses originating from Scotland. The David Williams photographic charter started at 09:45 and ventured into the Blackdown Hills skirting Devon and Somerset. The locations visited included Culmstock, Hemyock, Dunkerswell, Broadhembury and Kentisbeare finishing around 17:15.
The colourful pair looked at home in the Devon countryside and sparked much interest in the local villagers and other road users. The weather for the trip was changeable with sunny spells, building with dark low clouds arriving by mid afternoon and then heavy rain in two spells. The conditions lent themselves to a wide range of photography, which produced some interesting results.

GBRf also supplied their newest locomotive type No.69004 as a static exhibit for the event with the opportunity to visit the locomotive cab for a small fee, raising funds for GBRf charities. The railway provided a fantastic event with local hot food at both Swanage and Corfe Castle alongside the ever popular beer festival.
St Philips Marsh Depot Tour - 23rd April 2022
The 23rd April 2022 provided a rare opportunity to attend a 90 minute guided tour of the GWR St Philips Marsh Depot (Bristol). The charity ticketed event provided a chance to go behind the scenes at one of the UK’s oldest mainline railway depots still in operation today. With a history established in 1910, the depot has modernised to fit in with the 21st Century. The biggest change being the introduction of the InterCity 125 High Speed Train fleet in 1976, with a brand-new maintenance shed being built, which is still in use today. I would like to thank Alex and the team at GWR who took time out of their busy schedules to make this visit possible. All proceeds from the ticket sales went to 'Action for Children' as part of the FirstGroup Corporate Charity Partnership, raising over £5000 for the charity.

The link between Dawlish Town Centre and Coastguards was still closed with a footpath diversion via Exeter Road to Coastguards. Views taken include the newly opened public area at Coastguards and feature the current platform works which were ongoing at the time of my visit.
The East Somerset Railway
The East Somerset Railway is located at Cranmore Station and runs for a couple miles. The railway is best known for its association with famous painter David Shepperd who had two of his locomotives based at the line. BR 9F No.92203 'Black Prince' and 4MT No.75029 'The Green Knight'. The line has a small branchline feel and and operates a small fleet of locomotives as well as taking on sub contract restorations of locomotives for other steam railways. The railway is also home to The Sentinel Diesel Group who look after a small fleet of former industrial locomotives.
The Portishead Branch
The Portishead Railway is a branch line railway running from Portishead in North Somerset to the main line immediately west of Bristol, England. It was constructed by the Bristol & Portishead Pier and Railway Company, but it was always operated by its main line neighbour, and was more usually thought of as the Portishead branch or the Portishead railway. It opened as a broad gauge (7 ft 1⁄4 in [2,140 mm]) line to connect new docks at Portbury, at the west side of the mouth of the River Avon, with the railway network. In 2002. Public consultation took place in 2015 regarding the reopening of the entire line to passenger traffic in 2020, as part of the MetroWest proposals. By 2020, the line was scheduled to reopen in December 2024.

2005 was another year of transition across the UK rail network, with passenger fleets mid-upgrade and plenty of loco-hauled trains in operation. East Anglia in particular was seeing a huge amount of new stock, liveries and locomotives transferring to the region, brining some colourful varieties.

KFM767 - Photographic Charter - April 2005 (RE-MASTERED)
The 1950 Bristol L5G - Reg: KFM767 was used on the 3rd April 2005 on a photographic charter to visit locations in West Somerset. Several additional vehicles also came along for the day. The event started at Bishops Lydeard Station with a roadworks scene acted out by A Connock & Son of Shepton Mallet in the station car park. After this attendees boarded the bus to visit Ash Priors, Crowcombe Village, and Crowcombe House before heading towards the sea passing through Old Cleeve, Blue Anchor and Dunster.
The weather for the day was not the best, with just one fleeting glimpse of sun at Dunster during the late afternoon. The event was organised by David Williams, the day went very well and was one of the first photographic charters which I attended. The bus was hired in from Crossville (Weston-super-Mare) and operated by Quantock Motor Services.

The Pennine Wayfarer - 12th March 2022
The Pennine Wayfarer charter was operated by Pathfinder Railtours on the 12th March 2022. The charter was re-dated from January and with space still available on the train we booked seats to take advantage of the lighter days, heritage traction and route through the Hope Valley and Copy Pit scenery.
The charter started at Bristol Temple Meads before heading to Birmingham, Derby, and Chesterfield where the tour was routed via the Hope Valley towards Manchester, before taking in a circular tour over the Pennines to Huddersfield and back via Stalybridge to Manchester Victoria and Bolton.
The charter was hauled by a pair of veteran Class 37 locomotives from Direct Rail Services. Significate as DRS had announced they would no longer be supporting the charter market from 2022.

Toton Bank & Cossington - February 2022
Toton Yard is located just to the west of Nottingham and has long been the central maintained facility for railway locomotives. The yard is a shadow of its former self, which once serviced the Nottinghamshire coal traffic. The depot and yard are currently operated by DB Cargo, and contains up to one hundred locomotives at any one time. The convenient location of 'Toton Bank' provides a fantastic view of the daily operations at the site.
The yard also contains a huge selection of stored locomotives waiting to either be stripped for spares or sold.
Toton will become the East Midlands Hub for HS2 with a parkway station being formed between Nottingham and Derby together with integrated light rail connections from the same site.
The selection of images in this gallery was taken on Saturday 26th February 2022.

Severn Valley Railway - Diesel Pioneer Service
The Severn Valley Railway 'Diesel Pioneer' service has been a great named train addition to the Severn Valley Railway since the Covid Pandemic. Many of the heritage diesel locomotives have been sharing operating days over the past year and the train services have been a big hit with enthusiasts. Sunday 12th September was the turn of the two operational Western Locomotives to operate three return trips during the day between Kidderminster and Bridgnorth.
Mainline registered D1015 'Western Champion' and home fleet loco No.D1062 'Western Courier' took it in turns to operate over the length of the line. Western Courier was also carrying the headcode identity of sister locomotive No.D1041 'Western Prince'.
A day rover ticket for the service costs £25 and can be pre-booked via the Severn Valley Railway website.

The Galloway Fifties - 11th September 2021
The Galloway Fifties charter operated by Pathfinder Tours, The Fifty Fund and GBRf operated on Saturday 11th September 2021, the tour having previously been postponed from 2020 because of the various COVID19 lockdowns in England and Scotland.
The charter featured two veteran Class 50 locomotives from The Fifty Fund. Nos.50007 and No.50049 set off from Tame Bridge Parkway (Birmingham) at 04:52 in the morning to reach the Scottish branch line location of Stranraer by 13:30.
The 750 mile round trip would mark the first ever visit of the the class to the Scottish outpost.
Passengers were provided with a short 20 minute break at Stranraer before returning to Ayr for a longer break. This allowed the crew time to move No.50007 to the front of the train, and fill the coaching stock water tanks before continuing the journey back to Tame Bridge Parkway.

Statfold Barn - Hunslet 150 Event - July 2021
Statfold Barn Farm, is located close to Tamworth in Staffordshire, over the last fifteen years it has grown to become what must be the most significant collection of narrow gauge locomotives in the UK. With over 30 steam locomotives and many internal combustion locomotives, representing most British and several overseas manufacturers. The line had one main station and three further halts along the length of the line.
Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th July saw the line hold a gala event to mark the 150th birthday of the Quarry Hunslet locomotives. With the first narrow-gauge quarry Hunslet being ordered for the Dinorwic Slate Quarry of North Wales in 1870. This first design evolved over the years and the quarry Hunslets became synonymous with the slate industry of North Wales. Two visiting locomotives 'Lilla' and 'Britomart' from the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railway joined 10 other locomotives.

Mid Hants Railway - Diesel Gala - June 2021
As the UK comes slowly out of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns the Mid Hants Railway became the first railway to hold a near normal Diesel Gala Weekend. The Severn Valley Railway had originally pioneered the way forward but passengers were restricted to staying on one train for the entire day. The Mid Hants allowed passengers to move freely between trains with a one way system in place, enhanced carriage cleaning, temperature checks for everyone who attended and the use of the NHS 'track and trace' app. Passengers on board trains were required to wear face masks, and the notorious drafty nature of the 1960's Mk1 coach offered ample ventilation with all the windows open on such nice summer weekend.
USA - California - 2005 (UPDATED 2021)
This gallery was updated in June 2021 with every image re-edited and remastered using newer processing software. A large selection of additional images have also been added to the gallery, which have never been seen online before.
In April 2005, I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to travel to the USA in order to photograph a completely different type of Railway system. Traveling with good friend Colin Marsden we flew from London Heathrow to Los Angeles International Airport. During the trip we visited the Cajon Pass, Tehachapi Mountains, as well as some other sights of Southern California. My personal thanks must also go to Gray Gray, Don Toles, Bruce Jones, Sheryl & Doug, and Robert Beyer, for all their time, energy and information which they supplied to make our stay in the USA a very enjoyable one. The photo's included in this gallery were taken between April 19th and May 5th 2005

The COVID Queens - Weymouth - June 2021
It was 8 months ago when I first ventured to Weymouth for a trip to see my first Cruise Ships up close. Another lockdown later and with restrictions on travel slowly lifting most cruise ships look like spending the Summer of 2021 anchored on the south coast of the UK. While P&O will be operating some domestic cruises, European and International cruises remain on hold. Ships are regually being rotated between Dover, Southampton, Weymouth and Torbay, and some new visitors have arrived to anchor in the sheltered waters.
I took advantage of an evening weather window on the 4th June 2021 to visit Weymouth and travel out into the bay onboard Supernova II with Skipper Lyle Stantiford. On the evening of my visit the

A Christmas Cruise - Torbay - December 2020
On the 12th December 2020 I took the opportunity of a rare weather window to have another go at capturing the current Devon Cruise ships at anchor in Torbay and Babbacombe bay. I managed to book with Paignton Pleasure Cruises and as there were only 7 people on board, I had the whole bottom deck to myself. The sea was flat and calm, and the sun was wonderfully warm. The weather was forecast sunshine and showers which provided some wonderful contrast and lighting conditions during the two-hour trip. Currently, Torbay is playing host to Holland America Line vessels 'Zaandam' and 'Volendam' as well as TUI 'Marella Explorer' (with Marella Explorer 2 was due to arrive from Portland later tonight). Babbacombe was playing host to P&O's 'Azura' and 'Acadia' along with Cunard 'Queen Elizabeth'. In addition to the cruise ships several container ships were also anchored in deeper water 'MOL Gratitude' and 'NYK Rumina' were also visible.
A Look back to 2004
2004 was a year of plenty and a year of transition in the railway world. It was also the first purchase of a Canon Digital SLR. In March 2004 I invested in my first ever Canon 10D SLR camera which at the time was one of the medium range cameras able to produce six megapixel images. This gallery charts my first year having switched from 35mm film to Digital for the first time. We start in March 2004 and run through in date order to December 2004. It was a busy year for rail trips including visits to Wales, the North East, Midlands, and London during the course of the year.
During lock-down I deiced to go back to the start of my digital collection and re-edit every image I took in 2004. Image processing software and my own Photoshop skills had advanced to new levels over the 15 years since the images were first taken, and I've been blown away with the quality of the finished images which have been reproduced from just a six megapixel image. We hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane.

Heavy Haulage - (Updated)
It's incredibly rare that 'Mega Moves' come to the Taunton area. Western Power in partnership with Mammoet moved a 178t Electrical Transformer into Taunton on Sunday 11th October 2020. The huge electrical transformer was shipped to the UK on the 29th September on barges and moved to Dunball Wharf (Bridgwater). This was the first time in 12 years the Wharf had been used for such a heavy lift. On Saturday 10th October the load was moved by road from Dunball (Bridgwater) to Chelston Weighbridge (Wellington). Overnight the transformer was lifted from its lorry cradle and fitted onto a Mammoet Self Propelled Modular Transporter. The load then traversed the entire length of the A38 into Taunton with the Police closing the road in sections. A tree team was also dispatched ahead of the load to remove overhanging branches and trees which may damage the multi-million-pound load. There was only one opportunity to capture the load as it would then be impossible to get past it. This is the impressive sight passing The Blackbird Inn on the A38.
Rugby Area - 19th September 2020
Saturday 19th September 2020 provided the opportunity to visit the Northampton / Rugby area to capture passenger and freight operations on the busy West Coast Mainline. Three remote locations were picked which gave good views of the railway, which also allowed social distancing. Rugby is a busy junction where traffic flows for Birmingham and Northampton split, it's also an important road / rail logistics hub with many well known companies such as Stobart, WS Transportation, WH Malcom, Tesco, & Sainburys all have large logistics operations at this important regional hub. Regular freight flows leave for Mossend, Wentloog, London each day, and the many through container services pass through Rubgy from Felxstowe, Hams Hall, Crewe Basford Hall and Mossend.
The below images capture operations on just one day at three locations. Grendon, Cathiron and Ansty in the Rugby area.

The COVID Queens - Torbay - September 2020
Having visited both Weymouth and Poole in preceding weeks an opportunity arose on Monday 14th September 2020 to join an evening trip out of Paignton Harbour with Paignton Pleasure Cruises on board 'The Dartmouth Princess'. The late evening trip would provide a dusk and early evening setting for three cruise liners anchored between Torquay and Teignmouth outside of the Torquay Bay beyond Thatchers Rock. P&O liners 'Azura' and 'Ventura' were anchored with Cunard Liner 'Queen Mary 2'. Sadly fellow P&O liner 'Arcadia' departed just as I had arrived into Paignton.
The unpredictable nature of the ships departing to go to sea and dump grey water and take on salt water means every opportunity needs to be taken to capture these amazing vessels while they are at anchor in the protected bays on the south coast of the UK.

The COVID Queens - Poole Bay - September 2020
Having visited Weymouth on the 29th August 2020, I booked on a second tourist boat from Poole for the penultimate trip by City Cruises Poole on Saturday 13th September 2020. For this visit to Poole Bay there was only two cruise ships at anchor in the, both were owned by Royal Caribbean Cruise Line. The two hour tour from the dockside at Poole allowed passengers close of views of the largest cruise ship in the world 'Allure of the Seas' and a passing view of 'Anthem of the Seas'. Sadly Anthem of the Seas had dropped anchor outside the three mile offshore limit which out tourist boat was allowed to travel. However the crew on board did a great job of allowing passengers on board to enjoy the size of the cruise ships.
The COVID Queens - Weymouth - August 2020
2020 will forever be know for a year in which the world was turned upside down with the first global pandemic sending a freely transmitting virus from Wuhan (China) around the world at alarming speed with dire consequences. Many industries suffered as a result, and the International Cruise industry was one of the first to experience the full force of the rampant virus early on. With up to 4000 people on board some of the larger ships it was easy to see how a virus could spread so quickly. With Cruise ships dotted all over the world the repatriation of British passengers was a huge logistical task. But once the passengers were safely delivered back to the UK, what happened to the cruise liners?. With all round the world cruise programs 'on hold', household names such as Cunard, Carnival, P&O and TUI needed locations to store their fleet of vessels for the the summer period. As the summer months progressed many of the colossal ships began to appear on the southern shores of the UK seafront.
The Devon Crompton - 8th March 2020
The Devon Crompton charter was operated by The Branchline Society on Sunday 8th March 2020. The tour operated using two veteran Class 33 locomotives, No.33207 (from West Coast Railways) and No.33012 (from the 71A Preservation Group). The 1Z38 09:38 London Victoria - Coleford Junction ran via the former southern stomping group of the Class arriving into Yeovil Junction around 13:00. The tour then reversed to include the Yeovil Junction - Yeovil Pen Mill link before proceeding west to Exeter, Crediton and Coleford Junction. The 1Z39 16:40 Coleford Junction - London Waterloo return leg of the charter was routed via Taunton, Bristol, Bath, and Westbury to Salisbury to include some of the former routes the Class once operated in British Railways days. - This video shows the No.33207 and No.33012 making light work of Whiteball Bank heading into Somerset and back to the Capital.
Model Railway Photography
Model Railway Photography can be very effective when combined with the use of photoshop and modern backdrops. While magazines such as Rail Modeller and Model Rail had existed for many years, the art of 'Model Railway Photography' had changed very little over the years. One person who spearheaded a new method of was Chris Nevard, his approach combining a photo of a railway model and then using editing software to insert real skies and other features into the image provided a new twist of the art of model railway photography. Although I don't own a model railway of my own, I have been lucky enough to have friends who are superb modellers and who have layouts which suit photography. All of the images included in this gallery were taken on a tripod with no additional lighting used. All images have been post processed using image editing software to enhance their appearance.
Great Western Memories - Didcot - 11th January 2020
Saturday 11th January 2020 provided a night of Great Western Railway nostalgia at the Didcot Railway Centre using GWR 4-6-0 'King' No.6023 'King Edward II' as the centre piece for an evenings photography under cover in the original Didcot steam shed.
The evening charter was organized by Timeline Events who have become masters at lighting scenes, providing atmospheric conditions alongside actors, which bring together some truly authentic reactions of the past.
King Edward II is painted in striking British Railways Blue, and looked at home stabled with former mainline express locomotives such as No.4079 'Pendennis Castle', No.5900 'Hinderton Hall', No.6998 'Burton Agnes Hall', and No.7808 'Cookham Manor'.

The Festive York & Durham Explorer - 30th November 2019
The Festive York and Durham Explorer charter was operated by Pathfinder Tours on the 30th November 2019 departing Bristol Temple Meads at 05:40 in the morning. The tour was hauled throughout by the two mainline registered Class 50s from The Fifty Fund Fleet No.50049 and No.50007. The pair are painted in GBRf colours following a contract agreement between the Fifty Fund and GBRf to use them on GBRf mainline traffic as and when additional motive power is required.
The charter operated mainly in darkness, with the main dropping off points at York, Durham and finally Newcastle. Newcastle is an incredibly tight station for photography which did not lend itself to obtaining images of the traction upon arrival at Newcastle. There was however ample time to walk out to the King Edward Bridge to capture some of the changing scenes in the low Winter light before sunset.

Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Railway - Diesel Gala - October 2019
The Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Railway held their Autumn Diesel Gala event on the 12th and 14th October 2019. The event featured locomotives from the 'home fleet' as well as the late operating weekend for the summer season visitor No.50035 'Ark Royal' from the Fifty Fund based at Kidderminster on the Severn Valley Railway. The Gloucestershire and Warwickshire railway boasts a large selection of former British Rail locomotives, all of which have been restored to stunning operational condition.

London Buses at Night - September 2019
The 7th September 2019 was the date set for the postponed Timeline Events photographic charter. The event started at the Brooklands London Bus Museum where RM3 was provided to transport photographers into Central London. Once in London we would meet up with four other Heritage London Buses supplied from Ensignbus. This was the largest amount of buses ever taken into London at the same time and provided the chance to capture busy scenes on the London Streets overnight. The photographic locations used for this shoot were the Tate Britain, Horse Guards Avenue, St Pauls Cathedral and Newbury Park Tube Station (near Illford).
Isle of Man 2019
Below are a series of updated galleries from a second visit to the Isle of Man in July/ August 2019 to coincide with the annual Transport Festival. The Island operates a stunning array of Victorian transport all of which forms part of the every day transport system on the Isle of Man. I was based in Douglas for a week long photographic visit to the Island and used the Islands excellent public transport for the majority of the trip, alongside a few days out in a car to facilitate moving between locations.

Welsh Highland Railway & Ffestiniog Railway
The Ffestiniog Railway is the world's oldest narrow gauge railway with almost 200 years of history, taking you on a 13½-mile journey from the harbour in Porthmadog to the slate-quarrying town of Blaenau Ffestiniog. Historic trains climb over 700 feet from sea level into the mountains through tranquil pastures and magnificent forests, past lakes and waterfalls, round tight bends (even a complete spiral) clinging to the side of the mountain or tunneling through it. The Welsh Highland Railway is the UK's longest heritage railway and runs for 25 miles from Caernarfon, past the foot of Snowdon and the picture postcard village of Beddgelert, then through the stunning Aberglaslyn Pass and on to Porthmadog. Passengers ride in some of the most comfortable carriages on any heritage railway in the UK, including first class Pullman luxury and freshly-cooked food delivered to your seat.

Bristol Zoo
Bristol Zoo Gardens is the fifth oldest zoo in the world. It opened our doors to the public on Monday 11th July 1836 and since then has welcomed over 90 million guests. They have helped save over 175 species from extinction in human care and in the wild. The Zoo is currently working on conservation and research projects across the world, from the Phillipines, South Africa as well as projects closer to home on the River Avon. The award-winning education team has taught over 40 million school children the value of nature, wildlife and the impact our society has on the world.
Seaton Tramway - (UPDATED)
The Seaton Tramway is located on the Devon coast, and runs inland to Colyton alongside the River Axe. Seaton itself lies between the Beer Head and Haven Cliff and is the gateway to the Jurassic Coastline. The tram line runs along part of the former British Railway track bed which once ran to Seaton. The River Axe also provides a wealth of wildlife from Shelduck, Oyseter Catchers, Baders, Foxes, Kingfisher and Barn Owls, and the line operates regular bird watching specials along with local wildlife experts. The 2ft 9 in (838mm) narrow gauge electric tramway with 120V DC overhead line was opened on during 28th August 1970 having with the site having been purchased by Claude Lane who was the owner of the Lancaster Electrical Company. Sadley he passed away just one year later and never got to see the attraction grow to its current size. The operational trams are all two thirds size replicas of original constructed trams.
Beer Heights Light Railway - (UPDATED)
The Beer Heights Light Railway is a Narrow Gauge Steam Railway located at the small fishing village of Beer (near Seaton) first opened in 1975. The railway exists as part of the Pecorama exhibition centre and operates 1 mile of 7¼ inch (184 mm) track. The hillside location offers stunning views of the Devon coastline and has plenty to keep children, and adults entertained for hours. The route starts off through the formal gardens, includes many bridges, extensive sidings and a lengthy tunnel. Following this, the train seems to go out into the countryside and passes the new Deepwater station. Here passengers may choose to alight to enjoy the tranquility of Lake Charlotte, the beautiful wildlife pond in Wildway Park, where there is also a nature walk and fitness trail. The train then passes a branch line which zig-zags down very steep gradients to the Beer Mine.
Mid Norfolk Diesel Gala - April 2019
The Mid Norfolk Railway held a three day Diesel Gala event between the 5th and 7th April 2019. I attended the gala on Friday 5th April 2019. Staying in Norwich the railway can be accessed via a short train journey from Norwich to Wymondham mainline station, from here it is a pleasant and short 15 minute walk to Wymondham Abbey Station. Although there is a mainline link from the mainline to the preserved line, trains are not able to operate with passengers on board onto the mainline network.
The line is 10.75 miles long and stretches from Wymonham Abbey at the south end of the line to Dereham at the north end, with Thuxton used as the passing location for trains running in opposite directions.

Greater Anglia Revisited - April 2019
Two years after my first photographic feature in the Greater Anglia area I returned at the cusp of a complete fleet replacement on the Greater Anglia Franchise. The franchise has always used locomotive hauled intercity style trains for its long distance diagrams between London Liverpool Street and Norwich and then various British built units to cover branch lines and other core routes. However this is all about to change with the delivery of the new Stadler Bi-mode Class 720, 745 and 755 units which will see a complete fleet replacement right across the Greater Anglis Network. The 111 Class 720 'Aventra' unit will be built by Bombardier in Derby while the Class 745 and 755 'Flirt' units will be built by Stalder and include 20 electric 12-car intercity trains, and 38 bi-mode trains: 24 four-car and 14 three-car vehicles. My visit records a point in time as the new trains begin to be delivered and a look at the current operations in East Anglia.

London - Times of Change - April 2019
With huge quantities of rolling stock have been introduced on various routes into and out of London, the current scenes are changing incredibly quickly. During my visit in April 2019 the Class 313s operating with Great Northern had just days left in traffic before they were due to to be sent for scrap, GWR HST sets were down to just eight diagrams a day, with the last set due to operate on May 18th 2019. Introduction of the Class 700s on the Thameslink corridor had already displaced the previous Class 319 to new parts of the UK or conversion into tri-mode units for future use with GWR. Class 91's on the LNER route out of Kings Cross will soon start to be replaced by the Class 801 Hitachi 'Azuma' . This Gallery features some of the colourful scenes from London during my two visits in April.
Southampton & Eastleigh - January 2019
Saturday 26th January 2019 provided a quick visit to Eastleigh and Southampton to visit the Eastleigh Model Railway Exhibition. The chance was taken to travel by train from Yeovil Junction (No.159008) to Salisbury and change for (No.158881) to Eastleigh. Eastleigh and Southampton are always bustling places to visit for freight and passenger actively thanks to the close proximity of the Southampton Maritime Container Port. Eastleigh is also an important and large infrastructure base for Network Rail.
At the time of my visit the South West Trains franchise had recently ended and had changed hands to become South Western Railway. While most of the trains were still in SWT branded colours, many were now sporting SWR branding.

North Petherton New Year Vehicle Meet - 1st January 2019
The annual New Years Day meet at North Petherton (formerly Taunton Cattle Market) is always worth a visit on the first day of the year. It's an organized meet of like-minded Lorry, Bus, Car, Bike owners to come and park up and have a catch-up. The event is certainly not set up for photography or photographers with exhibitors vehicles crammed into every parking space imaginable. The 2019 meet was bigger than ever, spilling out on the trading estate beyond. All manner of wheeled items appear with pristine restorations sitting alongside barn finds, highly modified vehicles, British and American Classics, Highly tuned vehicles and daily workhorses.
Exploring the Welsh Valleys - 18th December 2018
The Explore Cardiff and Valleys ticket is one which I have used previously as it offers unlimited travel on the Cardiff Valley Lines route between Barry Island, Penarth, Bridgend, Ebbw Vale, Merthyr Tidfill, Aberdare and Rhymney. With Arriva Trains Wales now ceasing to operate the service and the franchise re-branded as 'Transport for Wales' huge change is about to arrive in Wales. Not least will be the replacement of the Pacers and Sprinters which operate the Valley Lines routes. Having caught an early morning service to Bristol Temple Meads and then changed for a Cardiff service. We spent a small amount of time at Cardiff Central before exploring the various valley routes operated by the Class 142, 143 and 150 Units. The weather was typically Welsh but for late December it was probably about as good as we could of asked for.

Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Diesel Gala - 7th October 2018
The Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Railway held a home fleet Diesel Gala on the 6th & 7th October 2018. The GWR has probably the best selection of preserved former British Rail Traction in the country. With Two Class 37's, two Class 47's a Class 45, Class 24, and Class 20 there is something for everyone to enjoy.
The railway extension to Broadway has now added an additional four miles of track to the line, which is providing a longer journey and more interest along the length of the line.
I called into the GWR on the way back from the Severn Valley Railway Class 50 Jubilee Gala (as did many other Enthusiasts heading back to the South West), and paid a short visit to the line to view the progress on the Broadway Extension and ride through the wonderful scenery which the line offers.

Class 50 Golden Jubilee - Severn Valley Railway - 4th -6th October 2018
The Severn Valley Railway played host the biggest gathering of preserved Class 50 locomotives between the 4th to 6th October 2018. The Class 50 Golden Jubilee Gala had been the idea of the Fifty Fund to gather as many operational Class 50s together at their preserved spiritual home on the Severn Valley Railway, the event planned to celebrate the cult following the of the Class as they turned 50 years old. Examples of the Class were gathered from all over the UK. The biggest bonus of the event was the return to service of long term stored (and former National Railway Museum Locomotive) of No.50033 'Glorious'. In just over six months the locomotive was turned from a rusting stored locomotive with an unknown future, into an operational working locomotive by the Fifty Fund volunteers.

Krakow (Poland) - Trams in the City - September 2018 |
Between the 14th and 20th September 2018 I visited Krakow (Poland) for a week long trip to explore the city of Krakow. Flying direct from Bristol Airport to Krakow with Easyjet we landed around 10:00. After collecting our bags we walked the short distance to the Airport Station where we caught the train into the main station in the city, Krakow Glowny. Our Hotel was also within walking distance of the station, but was also next to a tram stop which later gave easy access to the Old Town, Jewish Quarter and Main Square.
|
Krakow Tram and Public Transport network is vast, and consists of 22 ordinary, 2 fast, and 3 night, tramlines with a total length of 347 kilometres (216 mi). As of 2013, the total route length of the tramway was 90 kilometres (56 mi), including a 1.4-kilometre (0.87 mi) tram tunnel with two underground stops. The trams in Krakow first started operating in 1882.

Innotrans - Berlin - 20th September 2018
The Innortrans event is held every two years in Berlin, Germany. I was lucky enough to be invited to attend this worldwide industry event which saw three UK trains launched at the event. InnoTrans is the world’s leading trade fair for transport technology and thus a media event of international significance. About 1 000 media representatives from 42 countries reported on InnoTrans 2018.
Every train manufacturer was in attendance. The huge event is held at Messe, Berlin in an events centre housed in 25 separate halls and including an outside rail connected display area. Trains from all over Europe are transferred by rail to be displayed for the worldwide railway media, manufacturing and procurement communities to view.

A Visit to Berlin - 20th - 21st September 2018
As part of a visit to Poland in September I caught an International service from Poznan to Berlin, in order to attend the Innortrans Event in Berlin. Before flying home to the UK there was time to kill before our flight, so a morning was spent located at Berlin Schönefeld Flughafen. The Airport station is located on the Berlin Ring, and can be busy with freight. Equally it can be very quiet. Local passenger services operate every hour taking visitors into and out of the city as well and operating local passenger links. The former East German Station is ideally suited for photography and provides plenty of angles from which to take images off passing trains. The images below were taken between 10:00 and 14:00 on the 21st September during a wonderfully sunny morning, prior to the weather collapsing shortly after 14:00. A good variety of internal German traffic and International traffic was recorded during this time, including two European Class 66 Locomotives.

Steam Railway - Isle of Man
The Isle of Man Steam Railway operates on a commercial basis between Douglas and Port Erin (around 15.5 Miles). The Steam railway is operated by the Isle of Man Government and is still used by commuters, shoppers, day trippers and visiting tourists. The line is a 3ft gauge. It's route is what is left of the once extensive network to Peel, Ramsey and Foxdale. The line dates from 1893 but it's use in the modern day has seen the Government make small concessions to allow try and allow as much disabled diversity as possible. The line has a large amount of plans for the future and at the time of my visit was waiting for a batch of boilers to arrive from the Severn Valley Railway which will allow more steam locomotives to come back into service. There are also big plans to enhance the current coaching stock fleet and return the troublesome General Electric Diesel to service which will assist greatly with the current locomotive availability.
Manx Electric Railway - Isle of Man
The Isle of Man Electric Railway date from the 1800s and travels 17 miles from Derby Castle (Douglas) to Ramsey via Laxey. The scenic beauty of the line hugging the cliff tops of the eastern face of the Island are the routes most endearing feature. The operation is unique that it’s owned and operated by the Isle of Man Government and provides a vital transport link between the towns and small villages along the route. The route has been running for 125 years since 1893 and operates with Victorian & Edwardian era infrastructure and rolling stock, but with equipment in some cases having been modified or updated to suit modern regulations.
The line operates with a mixture of Powered Trams (sometimes solo) and un-powered trailers which are often towed to provide additional capacity for passengers. The line is popular with locals, holiday makers and is often booked for large groups.

RNAS Yeovilton Air Day - 7th July 2018 Supercar Display at Yeovilton Air Day
Yeovilton Air Day held annually at the Royal Navy Air Station Yeovilton is always a great day out. The 2018 event saw visiting aircraft from central Europe as well as America and Canada. It had been five years since I'd last attended, and the 2018 event also fell in the middle of a UK heatwave with temperatures soaring into the high twenties.
A fine display of supercars and heritage vehicles, were presented at the annual RNAS Yeovilton Air Day, the collection of high powered vehicles gave the chance to view some of the countries most expensive road going super cars. |
The Peak District Explorer - 9th June 2018
'On Saturday 9th June 2018 Pathfinder Railtours operated 'The Peak District Explorer from Taunton to Buxton and back. The charter ran into a few problems before departure from Taunton when the empty stock for the train was delayed by a major brake fault on the locomotive (No.66129) when it tried to run around the stock at Westbury. By the time a second locomotive had been found and coupled to the stock, the empty coaching stock was 40 minutes late arriving at Taunton. The DB crew did a fantastic job at Taunton uncoupling and running around the train and got the procedure completed in record time.
Manchester Airport Viewing Park - May 26th & 27th 2018
Manchester Airport is unique in the fact it has a dedicated Public Viewing Park and several viewing areas around the airport. The introduction of the Emirates A380s flying into the Airport has become a real crowd puller for families and aircraft enthusiasts alike. The viewing park is located on the west side of the two runways and gives good views the runways and airport stands. There is a shop, cafe, and plenty of grassed areas for children and families to enjoy. The centre also has a RAF Nimrod, Tristar and former British Airways Concorde.
Manchester Metrolink - May 26th 2018
Manchester Metrolink is one of the biggest light rail networks in the UK, its system length is 57 miles long, with 93 stations. Metrolink currently operates a fleet of 120 Bombardier Flexity M5000 trams which is the third generation of trams to operate on the route. The Metrolink systems is also one of the oldest having started operating in 1992, since then it has gone from strength to strength and now links towns such as Eccles, Altrincham, Buy, Rochdale, East Disbury and Ashton-under-Lyne, as well as providing a secondary rail link to Manchester Airport. The system has been planned to create a central hub linked to the centre of Greater Manchester, where all trams on all lines pass through the central part of the city via seven operational lines/ routes.
Mayfield, Manchester: Abandoned Station Tour - 26th May 2018
Manchester Mayfield is a former railway station in Manchester, England, located on the south side of Fairfield Street next to Manchester Piccadilly Station (At the time named Manchester London Road). It opened in 1910 and was used by relief trains on suburban services to the south of Manchester. The station came into its own during electrification in the 1950’s but by August 1960 it was closed by British Rail.
I attended a tour with well known Mancunian Tour Guide, Jonathan Schofield which walked attendees through the site allowing them to see the current derelict state of the former station and buildings, and to learn about the history and unique character of this special site.

The Cumbrian Hoovers - 14th April 2018
The Cumbrian Hoovers charter operated by Pathfinder Tours ran on the 14th April 2018. The tour featured a pair of former British Rail Class 50 locomotives supplied by The Fifty Fund based at Kidderminster. The two locomotives No.50049 'Defiance' and No.50007 'Hercules' hauled the 1Z50 06:01 Birmingham International - Carlisle on the 220 mile trip north. After a run up the West Coast Mainline from Stafford to Leyland the pair branched right and headed for a photo stop at Hellifield before tackling the Settle and Carlisle route.
After a two hour break in the city, the pair then lead the retimed 1Z52 16:12 Carlisle - Birmingham International back via the Cumbrian Coast route to Carnforth. A photo stop was also made at Barrow before rejoining the West Coast Mainline. The tour operated without incident and provided 473 miles of English Electric traction.

Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway - Diesel Gala - 17th March 2018
The Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway held a Diesel Gala Weekend on one of the coldest and wintry weekends of the year. I visited the line on Saturday 27th March 2018. The event featured the return of recently restored Class 37 No.37227 by Graeme Watkins Railways. The locomotive is now based at the Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway. Joining the Class 37 were the part restored Class 31 No.31163, Class 17 No.D8568 and visiting Class 33 from West Coast Railways No.33207. The line also used thier own Class 121 Bubble Car No.55023 for one short return trip to Wainhill and back.
The day was bitterly cold with snow falling all day long, however it was well attended with the cafe doing a roaring trade with hot drinks, and bacon rolls being served all day long to keep enthusiasts warm inbetween trips to Princess Risborough.

RNAS Yeovilton Shoot - 15th March 2018
Thursday 15th March 2018 I attended my first organized Aircraft Shoot with Theshold Aero at the Navy Wings hanger within the Yeovilton Airbase. The event was very well organized and photographers were assembled for coach transfer into the live airbase and dropped off into the designated area. A superb collection of historic aircraft from Navy Wings were also joined by a Royal Navy Merlin and Helicopter Operations 'Sea King' from its base at Portland UK. The event started at dusk and then continued with staged lighting until dark. Around 140 photographers enjoyed the evenings photography and although some light rain was present the heaviest stayed away until it was time to drive home.
Barrow Hill Roundhouse - 11th March 2018
The Barrow Hill Round House has been on the the same site since 1870. Having been build as an original steam shed for the Midland Railway the 24 Road round house survived until closure of the final coal pits in 1991. Thankfully In 1989 Barrow Hill Engine Shed Society was formed with the intention of saving from demolition the Roundhouse on the site of the soon to be closed British Rail engine shed, and after extensive restoration the shed reopened as a preservation centre in 1998. Since then the centre has become an important centre of railway locomotive repair and restoration. As well as preserving the original round house, the sidings outside now provide ample storage for both preservationists, and mainline operators to store locomotives.
Trollybuses at Sandtoft - 10th March 2018
The Trollybus Museum at Sandtoft (North Lincolnshire) played host to a Timeline Events Photographic Charter on Saturday 10th March 2018. The event featured three former Bradford liveried buses for the first part of the day. After an short dinner break in the evening to wait for the darkness to arrive, two former London Transport buses (one being a standard engine'd RT3323 - LYR542) were provided, before we switched back to the three Bradford examples to complete the photography. The event also coincided with heavy rainfall during the early part of Saturday morning which provided some wonderful reflections in the various large puddles which had formed around the complex.
Gloucester, Hatton, Cossington, Grimsby - 9th/10th March 2018
This set of images in the gallery came about more because of travel to position for a photographic charter in North Lincolnshire on the 10th March. Leaving home on the Friday 9th March I traveled north to in one / two hour increments throughout the day. The first location was the south end of Haresfield Loop (in Gloucestershire) where we captured one freight and the Network Rail NMT. I then continued up the M5 and A46 to reach Hatton (located on the Chiltern Mainline just north of Leamington Spa), the small village station offers some good spots for photography both at the station itself and a short walk down the adjacent Grand Union Canal to an footbridge located at the north side of a triangular junction. From Hatton I moved to the East Midlands visiting Cassington which is located on the busy four track Midland Mainline.
Western Region Steam 'On Shed' - Didcot Railway Centre - 12th November 2017
Saturday 12th November 2017 was an event I'd been waiting to attend for some time. A night shoot at Didcot Railway Centre organised by Timeline Events. Didcot houses a large selection of Great Western steam locomotives from small tank engines right up to mainline express locomotives. Our evening was mainly based inside the large shed complex which provided plenty of atmosphere, but we were also able to record some of the scenes outside using natural lighting.
Timeline Events provided the lighting and smoke machines, and actors to set the scene. It was an excellent evenings photography coupled with a wonderful hot meal provided by the on site cafe who specially opened up to cook for the 30 - 40 photographers who attended. Below are a selection of images taken at the Didcot event which were then processed in Photoshop and Google NIK.

Mid Hants Diesel Gala - 20th October 2017
The Mid Hants Railway held their Diesel Gala in the Autumn of 2017 between the 20th and 22nd October. Visiting Locomotives were also provided from other preserved lines to bolster the home fleet, all of which operated over the steeply graded 7 mile preserved railway.
The event was well attended and offered good value to the Enthusiasts wishing to sample the traction over the steeply graded line. Trains were delayed on the Saturday morning after the first train from Alton slipped to a stand on the bank which delayed services for up to an hour. A timetable adjustment was made at the end of the day to ensure crews and locos still finished at the correct time. Below are a selection of images from the Hampshire based line.

South Wales - 17th October 2017
I took a quick trip to South Wales on Tuesday 17th October. Scenes on the railways are always changing but no more so than at the moment, both in terms of the new trains which have been introduced to replace the 40 year old HST's, but also in terms of the prolific high rise building work which is completely changing the skyline of Cardiff. In recent years millions of pounds of development money has been poured into the city centre and bay areas of the city, sparking a building and regeneration revolution.
During my short visit to the area I recorded some of the railway operations which can be viewed in the Cardiff area, and also traveled on board the brand new Class 800 IEP trains on only their second day in service.

The Caledonian - 7th October 2017
It had been 10 years 3 months since I'd last had the pleasure of experiencing mainline Class 50 rail tour so when the opportunity arose for a 50th Anniversary special behind a pair of Class 50s taking them back over their former stomping ground between Crewe and Glasgow I knew I had to be there...... no matter what.
West Midlands Day Ranger - 30th September 2017 |
Midland Metro (NEW) |
The West Midlands Day Ranger ticket covers a large area of the West Midlands for just £25 (before any railcard discount) and provides excellent value for money for unlimited travel between the extents Hereford, Crewe, Rugby and Leamington Spa. We opted to travel from Kidderminster having attended a night shoot on the Severn Valley Railway the night before. We traveled into Birmingham before heading back to Stourbridge and then down to Leamington Spa for the afternoon. We also took time to explore Birmingham City Centre including the new Midland Metro Tram extension outside the newly redeveloped Birmingham New Street.
|
The Midland Metro operates between Birmingham and Wolverhampton on a mixture of street tracks and dedicated rail tracks. The service is owned by Transport for West Midlands but operated by National Express. The line first opened in May 1999 using the former Birmingham Snow Hill to Wolverhampton Low Level ines. It originally terminated at Birmingham Snow Hill. However a recent plan of track/ network extensions has now bought the tram into the heart of Birmingham. Further investment and expansions to grow the network are planned to take place over the coming years. When the line first opened it used a fleet of 16 AnsaldoBreda T-69 Trams from Italy, but the recent upgrades to the route have seen a new fleet purchased and introduced.

1st Generation DMU's - Arley - 29th September 2017
On the 29th September 2017 made the trip to Bewdley on the delightful Severn Valley Railway. A night photographic event was organised by Martin Creese of 30472 Charters in conjunction with the West Midlands DMU Group and photographer Jack Boskett helping to set up the various scenes. The setting for this event was slightly different than last, as we were to board the Diesel Multiple Unit and travel up the Severn Valley Railway to Arley Station. At Arley minimal lighting was set up, as the station was so well lit. After the previous success of the Bewdley Charter February, Arley Station provided an excellent quaint location to record branchline scenes of the past.
East Midlands Rover - September 2017
The East Midlands Rover ticket covers a vast area of the UK rail network. During a week in September I spent time with three fellow enthusiasts using this ticket to its full effect. Because of allowable travel area we decided to spend two days based in Doncaster and the rest of the week based in Nottingham. This gave us more range and interest from our tickets. The full priced East Midlands Rover is £111(discounts are available for those with Railcards) and the ticket valid for seven consecutive days, this works out at £15.80 a day. The Rover is valid after 09:00 in the morning and can be used with Virgin East Coast, East Midlands Trains, Cross Country, Northern Trains, and First Hull Trains. Because of the freedom to travel we also had allowable time each day to explore towns and cities covered by the ticket. Further images taken during the week can also be found on the Building/ Architecture pages and Light Rail pages of this website.

Old Oak Common - Legends of the Great Western - 2nd September 2017
The 2nd September 2017 provided the opportunity to visit a unique open weekend at the famous Old Oak Common Depot in London. During the depot’s 111-year history, its dedicated, highly skilled staff have maintained everything from steam era Kings and Castles, to the diesel-powered Westerns and Warships. In 1976 the depot was the maintenance hub in the Western region for the newly introduced High Speed Trains, the iconic trains which changed the face of Intercity travel in the UK. While the HST fleet still operates today it is soon to be replaced after over 40 years of service by the Hitachi Intercity Express Train, which will provide another step change in passenger experience. The 2017 event was put together and promoted by GWR. It gathered former legends of the Old Oak Common depot to provide a feast of photographic and public interest. No fewer than seven Class 50's attended the event together with with one of the most impressive lineups charting the railway progress through from steam, early diesels right up to the current IEP passenger train. The hot summer day saw crowds flock to the event with thousands of pounds being raised for charity. GWR powercar No.43093 was also named at the event 'Old Oak Common HST Depot 1976-2018'
Williams F1 - Heritage Formula 1 Collection - 1st September 2017
On Friday 1st September 2017 I was lucky enough to visit the Williams Formula 1 Conference Centre at the company base in Grove, Oxfordshire. Williams are the only team who have a dedicated museum which is open to the public (via website booking) on given days of the year. The museum charts the history of the Formula one team from its inception through to the current day. Of the 40 former F1 cars on display, 38 have working engines and regally attend events all over the world. The museum is housed in a former factory which was used to build a BMW race car for the Le Man 24 hour race. Once the car had been built the museum was founded. The tour is incredibly informative and Williams provide the great hospitality for the time that you spend with them.
Severn Valley Railway 'Spring Diesel Festival - May 2017
The Severn Valley Railway held their 30th Anniversary of Diesel Gala events on the 18th, 19th, 20th May 2017 providing a line up of 24 locomotives over three days. Organizers also hired in a rake of Intercity liveried Mk2 air brake coaching stock to provide extra capacity and to match with prototypical locomotives from the day. Crowds of enthusiasts descended on the 16 miles line to enjoy the sights and sounds of diesels from their youth, while many of the younger generation came to witness diesels of the present and future. The huge event was hailed a complete success with trains packed to the rafters with passengers on virtually every trip. The festival highlights the importance of Diesel Gala events preserved lines, proving that with the right formula and pricing strategy and marketing and timetable that any diesel event can and should make money.
Taunton Heritage Bus Rally - May 2017
The 5th Taunton Heritage Bus Running day in Taunton held on the 14th May 2017 resulted in the biggest gathering of buses and visitors to the event yet. The market town of Taunton is well suited to an event of this size, and photographically the towns buildings, and local countryside provide an excellent backdrop to record these former work horses providing pleasure rides for the general public. Several improvements to the 2017 event were added, these were mainly health and safety related. Viewing from the Bus Station was from behind designated barriers as in previous years crowds ambling around the Bus Station parking area had become a concern for the drivers and volunteers trying maneuver buses in and out of parking spaces. More double deck buses were provided for the Bishops Lydeard, Wellington and Town Circular routes to provide more capacity on these routes.
Swanage Railway 'Dawn of the Diesels' - May 2017
The 5th 6th 7th May 2017 provided a feast of former British Railways Diesel Locomotives at the Swanage Railway for the 'Dawn of the Diesels' event. The annual diesel gala has fast become the premier Diesel Gala in the South West, with year on year success growing the core principles which draw in Railway Enthusiasts from far and wide. The 2017 event featured 10 visiting locomotives with class members from right across the British Rail spectrum. The tried and tested technique of combining Diesels, Real Ale, BBQ food, special edition etch glasses, special mugs for each event, late night Beer Ex services and driver experience works brilliantly and provides much needed additional income to the railway to help boost the takings throughout the three day event.
Crowle & Barnetby - April 2017
Barnetby was once the mecca for railway photographers, its classic semaphores untouched since the days of steam and large quantities of freight made it the ideal location to record the buys UK freight scenes alongside the classic design of signals. While the signal boxes still stand they no longer operate the modern signals and the gantries are long since removed. However the freight and passenger scenes are still buoyant and colourful, and although coal imports have declined the new flows of Biomass from the Port of Immingham to Drax are very much in their infancy. I took a very brief visit to the area on the 27th and 28th of April and manged a couple of hours photography. On the 27th I visited Crowle (which is located to the west of Scunthorpe) alongside the Stainforth & Keadby Canal, before making time for a couple of hours at Barnetby on the 28th April.
Great Central Railway - April 2017
During the early part of 2017 The Heavy Tractor Group returned their prize asset back into the 1990's sectorization period when the locomotive once carried Railfreight Metals livery. The heavyweight Class 37 is the first of its type to enter preservation and has been restored to a high standard.
Having recently been named the locomotive was used on a Diesel Running diagram on the Great Central Railway on the 28th April 2017. Below are a selection of images from the afternoon running day between Loughborough and Leicester.

East Anglia - March 2017
The East Anglian Region is currently on the verge of major change, with Greater Anglia having ordered and entire fleet of Electric Multiple Units from Stadler, locomotive hauled trains between London Liverpool Street and Norwich will soon be replaced by new EMU's. The issue of increased container traffic from the port of Felixstowe is also now feeding many more services via Ely and March thanks to a new multi million pound chord constructed at Ipswich, this allows services to head both north and south from the container port. Following the completion of Cross Rail in London paths for freight services will become even harder to obtain, and so threading them through the London suburbs will also become more of a challenge. I spent just over a week in the Ipswich/ Norwich area recording the current freight and passenger services before the major changes take place.

Bewdley - 1st Generation DMU's - 24th February 2017
On the 24th February 2017 I made the trip to Bewdley on the delightful Severn Valley Railway. A night photographic event was organised by Martin Creese of 30472 Charters in conjunction with the West Midlands DMU Group using both and photographer Jack Boskett helping to set up the various scenes. This was the first time anyone had tried a shoot just using Diesel Multiple Units, however this unique event worked incredibly well, allowing multiple scenes to be set up at the same time, and allowing interior and exterior shots to be taken. There was also plenty of time and room for photographers to move around the station area during the evening. I would like to thank all those who have their time and effort to make this event such a success, and hopefully it paves the way for future shoots to be expanded on using heritage DMU's on other railways.

On the 17th February 2017 I joined Timeline Events for another enjoyable evening of night photography at Buckfastleigh. As with previous events the evening was divided up into two locations, one yard scene and one station scene where photographers were free to walk between the two locations and join different scenes as these pleased. The South Devon Railway also had visiting Beattie Well Tank No.30587 which complimented the shoot providing a second smaller tank alongside No.1369.
The station scene used BR Pannier Tank No.6412 with several coaches and actors to provide period station scenes.

The 'Swinging Sixties' - 4th February 2017
Saturday 4th February 2017 provided another opertunity to venture into central London with Timeline Events on an organised London Bus shoot. The event started at the London Bus Museum (Brooklands) at 19:30 where we boarded prototype Routemaster RML3 (SLT 58) and journeyed into London under the cover of darkness. The 25 photographers were joined by volunteer drivers, crew and actors in period dress from the 1960's. a second bus LYR826 (RT2775) also joined us providing some interesting content for the evening.
Our route through London took in some well known landmarks where buses and actors where posed in various scenes to recreate the 1960's but also provide a comparison with the modern structures now gracing the skyline of London. After an enjoyable evening out we returned to Brooklands at 04:00 very tired but pleased with the images we were able to capture.

Concorde - G-BBDG - 30th November 2016
On the 30th November 2016 I joined a Timeline Events photographic evening at Brooklands Aircraft Museum (Surrey), where the opertunity to photograph the second of the two production Concorde at night had been arranged. The event saw 40 or so photographers gather in freezing winter conditions to capture the iconic aircraft using positioned lighting and smoke machines to go some way to recreate scenes from the past.
The evening event was a great sucsess and unqiue that this is probably one of the only Concorde's in the UK to be able to be photographed in this way. The others either being housed in tight buildings, or out of bounds to the general public. Below are a selection of images from the night.

Tonbridge - 17th November 2016
Tonbridge is located in the south of the UK between London and Dover and provides a key role in serving the south eastern section of the UK with infrastructure support and large amounts of aggregate traffic to and from the various south eastern stone terminals such as Grain and Angerstein Wharf. During the Autumn and Winter months Tonbridge Yard is used as a base of the many Rail Head Treatment Trains (RHTT) and Network Rail Deicing Trains. GBRf operates many of the trains from Tonbridge Yard and many of its locomotives can be found operating in the area. My route to Tonbridge was via Reading and Redhill using GWR and Southern Trains. South Eastern and Southern are the two main passenger operators which serve Tonbridge, both of which provide good links to London and the south coast. This gallery provides a selection of images from just four hours at this busy little interchange.
London - 16th November 2016
London provides a wealth of railway transportation photographic opportunities, in recent year the huge investment in public transport for London has seen a surge of schemes designed to better transport passengers around the city. Getting from location to location couldn't be easier or quicker. The London Overground 'orbital' provides an alternative means to the tube encircling the city. Thameslink was once an outdated rail operating providing a North/ South link through the city, but now has been rejuvenated with longer, quicker trains operating through newly upgraded stations. The pace of change in the city is overwhelming and shows how fast the transport solutions in the city have the progress to keep ahead of the growth.
Somerset and Dorset - Railway Walk - 14th November 2016
On November 14th I joined a few friends to walk part of the former 'Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway' from Bath Green Park Station through to Midford. The route is now part of the sustrans cycle network (Route244) and is unique that the route provides a walking and cycling route right through Devonshire Tunnel (409m) and Combe Down Tunnel (1672m long). Our walk started at Bath Green Park station, which is now a car park for Sainsbury's. Exiting the car park we crossed the steel lattice bridge which once allowed trains to cross the River Avon into the station. From here much of the trackbed has been built upon, although a few local road names of Stanier Road, Pines Road, Ivo Peters Road and Midland Road provide a clue to the railway past.
Isle of Wight - Island Line - 1st October 2016
The Isle of Wight contains a unique railway system which it detached from the mainland UK, and stuck in a time warp. Despite being part of the South West Trains rail franchise, the Island Line operates a small fleet of 1938 vintage London Underground tube trains, which run along the eight mile route between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin. On any given day there are normally only two trains operating on the route providing a twenty minute service. The remaining stock is looked after at the small depot based at Ryde St John Station.
The Island Line also has a preserved steam railway which can be accessed from the mainline at Smallbrook Junction during operating days. The preserved line operates between Smallbrook Junction, Havenstreet and Wootten.

Isle of Wight Steam Railway 'Diesel Gala' - 1st October 2016
The Isle of Wight Steam Railway held their first ever 'Shunter Shuffle, Diesel Gala' between the 30th September and 2nd October. The quaint island railway is known for its picturesque scenery and superb restoration of elderly locomotives and coaching stock, but had never previously held a Diesel Gala event. The home fleet of Diesels consisted of Class 05 No.D2554 (fresh from a rescent overhaul and repaint), Class 03 No.D2059 (03059) and Barclay 0-4-0 Shunter No.235. The line also took the step to bring in a Class 03 from the mainland, which was No.03197 from the Mangapps Railway. Together the small fleet provided a two train service, brake van rides and a small freight train. The heritage Island Line Tube Trains also stopped all services at Smallbrook Junction allowing passengers to access the railway via the passenger ferry from Portsmouth Harbour to Ryde Pier Head.
Shoeburyness & Southend - 18th September 2016
Both Shoreburyness and Southend are connected to London Fenchurch Street via the National Express Franchise 'C2C' (City 2 Coast). The network is almost self contained, having to interact with hardly any other operators over its route. As such it's always had a very high punctuality figure. National Express run a fleet of Class 357 Electrostars which were built by Bombarider Transportation based in Derby between 1999 and 2002.
My visit to the route network was tagged onto the back of a two day trip where I visited the Epping and Ongar Railway on Saturday 17th September before staying in London, which gave the chance to visit the Thames Estuary coastline on the Sunday, where we visited Shoeburyness and Southend Pier before returning to London.
General Update to Galleries
The London Bus Gallery (NEW)
The Classic London Bus comes in all shapes sizes and specs, while they may no carry out the day to day work in London any more, hundreds have been preserved and many lovingly restored by new owners. This gallery provides a selection of images detailing some of the varied London Buses which can still be found in the UK.
Epping and Ongar Diesel Gala - 17th September 2016
The Epping and Ongar Railway is located at the far end of the London Underground Central Line near Epping. The preserved railway exists because of the former London Underground operation to Ongar, which was closed in 1994 shortening the Central Line back to Epping. If travelling by public transport arriving into Epping Station, passengers are then transferred on the Heritage London Buses and taken the short distance to North Weald Station. The former London Underground route is no longer linked, but in the future there may be a chance to bring the preserved line into Epping for a direct platform transfer between London Underground and the Epping & Ongar Railway. Diesel Gala Event provided a good selection of heritage diesels.
Switzerland - 13th June to 19th June 2016 (UPDATED WITH VIDEO)
Between the 13th and 19th June 2016, I visited Switzerland for a multi transport trip through the delightfully scenic, inviting and friendly country. I had previously visited Switzerland back in 2009 for a short rail based trip and have wanted to return to this country for some time. After many months of research and planning I embarked on the seven day adventure with two friends, with the sole purpose of recording the rail freight traffic on the Gottard route while staying in the picturesque village of Wassen. The opening of the new Gottard Base Tunnel later in the year would soon divert the majority of the passenger and freight traffic away from the classic mountain spirals and scenery which had made this route so famous over the years. While the opportunity was still there we chose Wassen as our base for the week
Scotland - 11th July to 16th July 2016
Between the 11th and 16th July I ventured to the far north of Scotland in an effort to visit the most northerly point on the UK Mainline (and Mainland!). The aim was to reach Thurso and Wick from Inverness on the Tuesday before then visiting Kyle of Lochalsh on the Wednesday from Inverness and then travelling from Inverness to Haymarket via Aberdeen during the Wednesday afternoon/ evening. Thursday would then be spent exploring the Ayrshire Coastline, and nipping back into the England for a quick trip down the Cumbrian Coast. Friday would entail a visit to Glasgow and Tweedbank before a trip around the Fife Circle in the evening from Edinburgh. Saturday we would return to the South West travelling by Virgin East Coast HST from Haymarket to London Kings Cross before a quick trip across London to Paddington before returning to the South West on a GWR HST set.

Severn Valley Railway Diesel Gala - May 20th-21st 2016
Thursday 19th May to Saturday 21st May provided the largest gathering of preserved and mainline diesel locomotives on the Severn Valley Railway. Upwards of 20 locomotives were assembled for the event, while not all were operational it was a huge undertaking to get so many locomotives onto the railway for the three day event. The Severn Valley Railway know how to make the best from Diesel Gala weekends and the railway was packed to the gunnels with enthusiasts wanting to travel behind the heritage and modern diesels. I attended the event for the Friday and the Saturday and while the weather was somewhat inclement below are some of the images taken over the two days.
A day with 'Midland Red' in the Cotswolds - 19th May 2016
.Timeline Events held a Photographic Charter using two former Midland Red buses on the 19th May 2016. The day started at and finished at the Midland Bus Museum based at Wythall. The museum boasts a collection of 96 preserved busses and hold regular events at the site. The first half of the day used 1964 built Midland S16 which was the last S16 built with a crash gearbox. The morning session took in photographic locations at Wythall, Binton, and Chipping Campden. After returning for a lunch break back at the museum it was a quick switch over to a Midland D9 double decker for an afternoon foray through the classic scenes in the Cotswolds. We visited Willersey and Broadway to complete the days photography before the weather closed in for the day. .
LMS 8F 'On The Goods' - 18th May 2016
Wednesday 18th May was my first visit to the Great Central Railway taking part in a photographic charter, and the first day of a three day trip around the Midlands. The Great Centrals LMS 8F No.48624 had been provided a replacement for visiting 42XX 2-8-0 No.4247 which had been unable to operate. The charter was revised to start at 13:00, and luckily although the weather was dull, torrential rain had already passed through the east midlands by this time. Because of the dull weather I've taken more time with this gallery to try and recreate a selection of black and white/ period images which I hope reflect the views of the period when these heavy freight locomotives would of pounded the tracks with rakes of mineral wagons.
The Hawk Conservancy - Andover - 15th May 2016
The 15th May provided the unique opportunity to get up close with some of the residents of the Hawk Conservancy, with thanks to Timeline Events. The day allowed around 30 photographers unprecedented access to the Conservancies Hawk collection. As part of the day we were looked after by two of the enthusiastic falconers who flew an array of birds for the cameras. Some were placed as static subjects, while others were flown for the photographers to capture. The Andover based centre boasts a 22 acre site with over 150 birds and has a multitude of backdrops and locations, including a meadow and wooded areas. As well as photographing the stunning Birds of Prey we were also reserved seats in the 2pm public show.
London Bus Glamour Shoot - 28th April 2016
Timeline Events held a unique photo shoot at the Brooklands London Bus Museum on April 28th 2016. As dusk fell the doors of the bus garage were closed and rather than a bus exiting the garage for a night on the streets of London, the photographers were shut inside. Four groups of photographers were assembled to capture five female models who had been chosen to model 1960's glamour with London Buses providing the unique backdrops. Each area was set up with additional lighting equipment, and allowed small groups to rotate around the four different scenes, each group having a lead photographer. This method provided the maximum variety for the attendees and the chance to try out ideas, poses, props and lighting techniques.
Taunton Heritage Bus Running Day - 8th May 2016
Sunday 8th May the sun was out for the 4th Annual Taunton Heritage Bus Running Day, an event which has grown year on year since it was first conceived in 2012. The 2016 event provided between 45 an 50 buses, local trade stands, bus related sales stalls, a collection of Heritage Cars (located in Goodlands Gardens), Somerset Museum was also open to the public featuring a display of model trams. The buses operated routes to Wellington, Monkton Heathfield, Corfe, Stoke St Mary and also provided a 'town circular' giving free rides to the general public and enthusiasts. The Wellington route also provided a stop at Sheppys Cider, which had opened especially for the event to allow passengers a stop for refreshments and local produce.
St Philips Marsh Open Day (40 Years of the HST) - 2nd May 2016
The St Philips Marsh Open Day held on the 2nd May 2016 celebrating 40 years of the iconic High Speed Train which has operated on the UK rail network since 1976. As part of the open day power cars from current UK operators were gathered at the GWR maintenance facility in Bristol providing a colourful line up of the class. To mark four decades of service GWR repainted the very first production power car into its original BR Blue colour scheme. No.43002 was rolled out to the crowds and officially named 'Sir Kenneth Grange' by Sir Kenneth himself.

The Heavy Haulage page has been updated with images recording the movment of Class 35 Hymek No.D7017 from the West Somerset Railway to Bristol St Philips Marsh open day.
Seaking - 'Queen of the Skies'
Monday 21st March 2016, marked the end of the Royal Naval Sea King's based at RNAS Yeovilton. While I was unable to get out for the final farewell flight around the South West, I thought a collection of images of some of the Seakings I've recorded over the years may go some way to paying a small tribute to the 'Queen of the Skies'.
Avon Valley Railway - Diesel Gala - 13th March 2016
The Avon Valley Railway near Keynsham held a small Diesel Gala Weekend on the 12th and 13th March using as many of their operational diesel locomotives and industrial shunters as were available. The Gala weekend also marked the debut of restored BR Blue Class 08 No.08202 on the line, working alongside BR Blue classmate Class 31 No.31101 The Avon Valley Railway is part of the otherwise-dismantled Midland Railway Mangotsfield and Bath Branch Line, which was closed during the late 1960s as a result of the Beeching cuts. The railway is perhaps best known for connecting the former Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway (S&DJR), whose northern terminus was at Bath Green Park station, with the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS).
Branchline Autotrain - South Devon Railway - 23rd February 2016
On Tuesday 21st February a small evening photography event was held at Staverton Station on the South Devon Railway. Timeline Events had already used 14XX No.1450 on a daytime charter along the South Devon Railway and offered an evening shoot as an option for those who were not able to attend during the day. The quaint countryside halt provided an great location for a small branchline Autotrain to recreate scenes from the bygone age of local passenger services in the area. The 14XX and Autocoach provided just the right sized train to use for a typical branchline station.
Branchline Steam - South Devon Railway - 19th February 2016
Timeline Events held an evening photographic charter on the South Devon Railway at Buckfastleigh on the 19th February 2016. The evening was set up to include scenes replicating Branchline Steam. Two areas were set up for photographers, the yard area at Buckfastleigh provided the chance to capture 'scenes on shed' using appropriately dressed volunteers to recreate the period, and a second area on the station platform provided an opportunity to recreate passenger scenes.
The evening was well attended, and the addition of some light rain provided some additional atmosphere to the event. The evening started shortly after 18:00 before ending around 20:30, providing several hours of photography.

California - April / May 2005 - (UPDATE)
The photo's included in this gallery were taken between April 19th and May 5th 2005, charting our photographic trip.
A one hour long video has from the 2005 trip has now been added to this page.

New Years Day 2016 - Vehicle Meet - North Petherton
The Annual meeting of classic vehicles held at North Petherton Junction 24, was once held in Taunton. Vehicles would meet in the Taunton Market Car Park before setting off in batches for a couple of laps around the town before returning to park. Since the market was closed by the local council it's now been moved to North Petherton, and sadly the town parade no longer takes place on New Years Day. Cars, Lorries, Vans, Busses, Bikes, Scooters, Tractors and Military Vehicles all meet on the first day of each year at the Junction 24 Market just outside North Petherton. Photography can be very difficult due to the amount of people and lack of organised parking / spacing of the attending vehicles however perseverance can provide some great shots.
The Princess Royal Stand - Cheltenham Racecourse
On the Friday 13th October Cheltenham Racecourse officially opened their brand new Princess Royal Building at The Open. The event concluded a two year construction build by Kier Construction and the £45million redevelopment of the course . Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal has a long association with the Cheltenham Racecourse, and gave her name to the new stand as well as agreeing to perform the official opening at twelve noon on Friday 13th November. Huge crowds gathered for the opening event which lead to an afternoon of races. The new building features three terrace levels and provides an additional capacity to the existing racecourse stand.
Haynes International Motor Museum
The Haynes International Motor Museum based at Sparkford in Somerset houses the UK's largest exhibition of the greatest cars from around the world with over 400 vehicles and bikes from nostalgic classics of the 50's and 60's to racing cars, super cars and production cars of their day. The stunning purpose built facility provides plenty of space the view the cars and bikes and to soak up the wealth of history and information displayed with the cars. The museum is bigger than it looks, with more rooms appearing as if from nowhere as you walk around the stunning exhibits. The highlights such as The Red Room, and American Collection are well worth spending extra time to view.
USA - September 2015
During three weeks of September 2015 I traveled to California in the United States of America. Myself and good friends Colin Marsden, Nathan Williamson, and Paul Clarke flew from London Heathrow on the 7th September to San Francisco with United Airlines. Our trip took us to the famous railroad mountain town of Tehachapi and also incorporated several days in San Diego along with a day trip to Los Angeles/ Long Beach, and a visit to the Californian State Railroad Museum located in Sacramento. The trip coincided with an Autumn heatwave in the Californian State, with temperatures topping out at 100 Degrees Fahrenheit most days. We used a 4X4 to travel between the three major cities but also used public transport to assist with getting around.

However I have been fortunate enough to visit the USA on a couple of occasions and record some of these machines at work in the California.
Battle of Brtiain Living History Show - August 2015
The Battle of Britain Show has been held in Taunton for several years now. It previously used local fields near Taunton Rugby Club but now frequents the West Somerset Railway Association land at Norton Fitzwarren. The living history event aims to recreate scenes from World War Two using preserved military equipment, authentic equipment and rein-actors to play the part of various military personnel.
The annual event also featured two mock up aircraft from the period, but sadly the booked flypast by a real Spitfire from RAF Biggin Hill was cancelled due to the poor weather conditions.
This gallery features images from the event, most have been edited to try and recreate scenes to fit with the period. On occasion some modern items have been removed from the shots for additional realism.

Wessex Truck Show - August 2015
The 2015 Wessex Truck Show held at the Yeovil Show Ground had to be the biggest and best yet, with over 400 trucks on display over the 8th and 9th August 2015. The sun shone for most of the weekend allowing drivers to spend extra time in the sun polishing their pride and joy. The event included a fun fair, craft stalls, remote control trucks, sales stands and of course the stars of the show, over 400 commercial trucks from the South West polished, waxed, and painted to provide visitors with some stunning exhibits to view.
USA - April/ May 2007
Two years after my first visit to America I was captured by the travel bug again and decided to take advantage of cheaper ticket prices to visit California for a second time. This time I traveled with good friends Colin Marsden and Chris Perkins, we decided to fly into San Francisco which gave much easier methods of travel from the airport. My visit coincided with good economic times. rail freight (particularly container traffic) where operating at high levels and railroad operations were easy to come by. Over the two week period we used our hire vehicle to ravel from San Francisco to Bakersfield then out along the 'trans-con' to via Route 66 to Needles, Topock, Kingman, Las Vegas, and then returning via Barstow and Cajon to Tehachapi and San Francisco.
Marine, Aviation and Portland - 27th June 2015
Bristol Harbourside Railway - 20th June 2015
The Bristol Harbourside Railway is a small stretch of former dockside railway dating back to the time when goods would arrive by rail for loading/ unloading onto merchant ships for export/ transportation around the world. Sadly much of the former docks complex has now been built upon by modern developments, including the expansion of the new Mshed museum. The BHR now operate a hemmed section of dockside track where they provide breakvan rides for members of the public on special operating dates in conjunction with the MShed Museum. On the evening of the 20th June I attended a specially organised charter (by 30742 Charters), where two Peckett Steam Locomotives were provided in steam, along with a rake of un-restored loose coupled wagons.
Taunton Heritage Bus Rally - 10th May 2015
Sunday May 10th 2015, saw the third annual Heritage Bus Running Day in Taunton. After the success of the 2013 and 2014 events, the 2015 even was expanded further to include more bus routes, a classic car display in Goodlands Gardens, and local craft/ cake sales located in Castle Green. A large amount of historic vehicles attended Castle Green/ Taunton Bus Station to provide free rides to members of the public, like minded bus enthusiasts, owners, and volunteers. The event was further enhanced by First 'Buses for Somerset' allowing the use of Taunton Bus Station to park buses alongside their own modern and colourful county fleet, and with First 'Buses for Somerset' also providing access to the Hamilton Road Bus Garage which was also opened to the public to have a look at how the modern bus fleets are maintained.
LFM320 Leyland Tiger & JFM575 1948 AEC Regal III - 9th May 2015
The 9th May 2015 was scheduled to be a day out on the country roads with Leyland Tiger LMF320, however owing to a blown gasket mid way through the trip, the gathered photographers took refuge at a local pub while AEC Regal III JFM575 was sent out as a replacement. The unscheduled breakdown (which was later repaired at the roadside), provided the rather unique opertunity to switch busses half way through the day providing more insterest for those who'd paid to attend the photographic charter. The day started at Bishops Lydeard Railway Station before heading to Ash Priors for the morning and then into the picturesque country lanes in the Crowcombe area. After a lunchtime bus swap, we then proceeded to the North Somerset coastline to set up some scenes at Blue Anchor before returning to Bishops Lydeard during late afternoon.
Swanage Railway Diesel Gala - 8th May 2015
Between the 8th and 10th May the Swanage Railway turned their railway over to the diesels for four days of classic traction in Dorset. Combined with the annual Corfe Castle Beer Festival the line revels in the use of Diesel Locomotives operating between 09:30 and 23:30 most nights of the gala. The event is always well attended and provides stunning scenery, along with lots of locomotives from various periods of railway history. The 2015 event was very well attended with large crowds of people who turned up to see the array of locomotives on offer from the Swanage Railway.
Belgium and The Netherlands - 27th April to 2nd May 2015
Between the 27th April and 2nd May 2015 I visited The Netherlands for a week, also visiting Belgium on route to and from the Eurotunnel terminal at Calais. The week in Holland was centred around the Breda - Tilberg - Rotterdam area. Our visit to The Netherlands coincided with the closure of the Betuweroute (the new double track high speed freight line linking Rotterdam Docks with the Germany). This resulted in rail freight being transferred back onto its former route using the Tilberg/ Eindhoven mainline, making this particular line incredibly busy with rail freight between the normal passenger services. We also visited the fascinating city of Rotterdam, using the high speed rail line between Breda and Rotterdam. The purpose of the trip was to view the sights of the city and capture the extensive city tram system.

London Bus Night Shoot - 25th/26th April 2015
On Saturday 25th April I attended a Timeline Events photographic charter with a difference. The event featured two preserved London Transport LT Buses from the London Bus Museum based at Brooklands. The unique feature of the event was a foray onto the streets of London overnight. The buses set off at 20:00 (Saturday) and returned to Brooklands at 04:30 (Sunday). The two London Transport icons were posed up at various landmark locations around London including the Royal Albert Hall, St Pauls Cathedral, Bank of England and on Waterloo Bridge.
France, Luxembourg, Belgium & Holland - July 2003
July 2003 was my first taste of European Traction involving a 1200 mile multi country road trip passing through four countries in seven days. Teaming up with Charles Woodland and Wayland Smith (and later Paul Richards) we planned an intensive trip which would allow us to capture some of the busy passenger and freight scenes in each county we visited. After driving to the Port of Dover overnight from the South West we caught the early morning Hoverspeed Seacat over to Calais. From here we embarked on a 300 mile jaunt down to Metz located close to the border with France and Luxembourg, before working our way back up through Belgium and into Holland. All of the images in this gallery are scanned from 35mm Slide's taken on my original Minolta 404 Si, at the time of this trip I'd not converted to the digital medium.

Swindon & Cricklade Railway Diesel Gala - 22nd March 2015
The weekend of the 21st and 22nd March saw the Swindon & Cricklade Railway hold a home fleet diesel gala using their ecliptic mix of Diesel Locomotives currently on the line. The preserved line is only 2.75 miles long, but hosts a wide variety of locomotives and stock, and a plucky band of volunteers who try to keep everything running. There are also plans with expansion to build an end station (close to Taw Valley Halt) next to the Swindon - Gloucester mainline which will undoubtedly bring in much needed revenue to the line. The line may also be helped by the relentless house building which is being carried out in the Swindon area, which thousands of new homes now closing in around the line.
Avonmouth & South Wales - 8th March 2015
Sundays can be quite busy on the rails of South Wales, especially during the afternoon, as many freights begin to operate to be in place for Monday morning. On Sunday 8th March I took a visit to South Wales to capture some of the more interesting workings operating in the Avonmouth and South Wales area. Several passenger services were operating different diagrams due to engineering work between Bristol and Westbury, and Tamworth to Derby. This provided additional shuttle services which had been strengthened at times to cope with additional passenger loads.

South Devon Railway 'Branchline Week' - 21st February 2015
Between Saturday 14th and Sunday 22nd February 2015 the South Devon Railway held a 'Branch Line Week' coinciding with the School Half Term. The railway is often described as “the quintessential former GWR Branch Line” provided prototypical services using an array of period rolling stock, steam locomotives and also utilised the lines resident Class 121 Diesel Multiple Unit. BR Black liveried small Prairie Tank No.4566 (visiting from the Seven Valley Railway) was also operating freight and passenger services. GWR 0-6-0 Pannier Tank No.6412 returned to operation following a seven year long overhaul. The locomotive had been returned to service wearing British Railways lined Green livery. GWR 0-6-0 Pannier No.1369 also celebrated it's 50th year in preservation on Saturday 21st February.

Switzerland - July 2009
During July 2009 I visited Switzerland with good friend Wayland Smith. We flew from London Heathrow to Zurich with Swiss Air before using the excellent Swiss Rail system to travel into the Graubünden Region of Switzerland. At Landquart we then switched from the standard gauge mainline network to narrow gauge 'Rhatische Bahn' (Rhb). Our base for our stay in the stunning country, was the ski resort of Davos, however at the time of our stay there was little skiing or snow to be seen. We then used the punctual public transport in order to access photographic locations set in the stunning Swiss Alps.
During our stay we used the popular tourist ticket, the Graubünden Pass, this starts at Bad Ragaz and then encompasses all stations within region 4 of the Swiss rail map below.

General Update - 11th January 2015
Belgium - 22nd May 2008
During May 2008 I was given the opertunity to travel to Belgium at the invite of Infrabel on behalf of Railway Herald.
The Invite was provided by Infrabel (The Belgian Railway Infrastructure
Mangment Company) for the railway media to view the extensive upgrade
work having been carried out on the Belgian railway network at its
ports. Before attending a press conference in Ostendee. This short trip
was an enthusiastic favour to assist with the popular online railway
magazine, rather than a trip for pleasure.
This short gallery of images features the article written for the online magazine as a result of the guided tours of the Belgian port visits at Antwerpen, Oostende and Zeebruge.

'Collett in Devon' - Photographic Charter - 8th December 2014
The 'Collett in Devon' photographic charter took place on the 8th December 2014, at the South Devon Railway and was organised by Timeline Events. The charter originally intended to used recently overhauled Pannier Tank No.6412, however slower than planned progress with the overhaul at Buckfastleigh meant the loco was not in traffic. Instead BR 0-6-0 Collet was offered as a replacement. The day saw three different formations used for three parts of the photographic shoot. For the morning two bauxite brown box vans and a single collett Coach were provided, in the afternoon the train was reformed into a small mixed freight train, and after dark the box vans and collett coach were reformed for a night shoot at Staverton Station.
Cardiff - 21st November 2014
Cardiff once used to always take a back seat to Newport with regards to interesting freight traffic during the 1990's, however the decline in traffic, and redevelopment of Newport Station has lead Cardiff to now generate more interest for enthusiasts.
Cardiff Central station is incredibly busy with links to most of the Welsh Valleys, the majority of the Arriva Trains Units frequent Cardiff Central throughout the day. Coupled with this are the mainline links to Swansea, London, Portsmouth and Manchester. Freight traffic also passes through the station including many of the heavily loaded coal trains heading for Aberthaw Power Station.
My visit to Cardiff was on an incredibly cold and wet November day, however the morning period provided a large amount of traffic to record.

Daventry - 20th November 2014
Daventry is located on the Northhampton Line to the south east of Rugby, the line also gives access to the sprawling metropolis that is Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal (DIRFT), where trains loaded with traffic for Tesco arrive and depart on trunk routes around the UK.
The terminal is currently in the process of expanding it's rail access further which in the future will allow more goods to arrive and depart using rail transportation.
I spent short period of time at Nortoft Lane bridge and recorded a surprising amount of traffic in the area.

Eastleigh - 19th November 2014
Eastleigh is a railway town located between Southampton and Winchester the town has always had strong ties with the railway thanks to the Eastleigh Railway Works which dates back to the days of steam. Today the Railway Works are still in use as a large maintenance and repair facility operated by Arlington Fleet Services. Eastleigh Station itself has always been a busy location for interesting freight traffic thanks to its close proximity to Southampton Docks, from where much deep sea container traffic originates. Eastleigh also has a large yard complex which Network Rail use as a base for their engineering traffic in the South of England. There is always something of interest at Eastleigh on any given day, whether it be shunting in the yard or heavy container trains passing through the station.

London - 17th November 2014
The purpose of a visit to London on the 17th November was to record the every changing railway scene in parts of the Capital which I had previously not covered in detail. The trip included visits to Mill Hill Broadway, Gospel Oak and later a ride on the Aylesbury - Princes Risborough 'Bubblecar' operated by Chiltern Trains, before returning into London for our train home.
Severn Valley Railway - Diesel Gala - 3rd & 4th October 2014
The 2nd to the 4th October saw the Severn Valley Railway hold another superb Autumn Diesel Gala. A feast of former mainline diesel locomotives were on offer for the general public and enthusiasts to enjoy. Many of the locomotives are now between 40 and 50 years old, but continue to be cared for by loving volunteers and owners. The SVR event was hugely popular with visitors, providing three days of British built heritage diesels operating over the sixteen mile route.
Bodmin and Wenford Diesel Day - 27th September 2014
The Bodmin and Wenford Railway held a heritage diesel operating day on the 27th September 2014, the event was also supported by Colas Rail Freight who offered the use of a Class 56 for the day. During Friday 26th the locomotive worked into Cornwall light engine from Cardiff Canton Depot. The event coincided nicely with the need to collect a stored Class 60 locomotive from St Blazey Yard. The Class 60 having previously been owned and operated by EWS/ DB Schenker was now in the ownership of Colas Rail Freight. After collection from St Blazey Yard the Class 60 was stabled at Bodmin Parkway to compliment the diesel operating day. Three locomotives from the Bodmin Diesel Group were also in operation, Class 33 No. 33110, Class 37 No. 37142 and Class 47 No. 47306 'The Sapper'.
West Midlands Day Rover - 20th September 2014
On the 20th September 2014 I used the West Midlands Day Ranger ticket to travel around the Midlands by rail. The ticket costs just £23 and provided excellent value for money for unlimited travel between the extents Hereford, Crewe, Rugby and Leamington Spa. We opted to travel from Worcester Shrub Hill and travel into Birmingham before heading North to Crewe. After a short photography break in Crewe we headed south to Rugby via Stoke on Trent before returning into central Birmingham and heading back to Worcester.
Dawlish Air Day - August 23rd 2014
Saturday 23rd August 2014 saw thousands of people descend on the quiet seaside town of Dawlish, for the 2014 Airshow. The event drew people from all over the United Kingdom to witness a superb collection of modern and wartime aircraft flying throughout the afternoon. The Dawlish Airshow is growing in popularity and each year get's even more recognition. The event is free and organized entirely by volunteers, and relies heavily on donations from the general public each year. Fundraising for the Dawlish Airshow is now an all year round activity to ensure each years event will go ahead. The 2014 event was notable for the appearance of the only two airworthy Lancasters flying as part of the British Memorial Flight, and probably the last appearance of the Air Sea Rescue 'Seakings' which will soon be taken out of service.
Model Railway Photography
Further images have now been added to the Model Railway photography section, featuring more images from a home American Railroad.
Heritage Transport
After attending the 100th Wiveliscombe Flower Show, the event had a large selection of Heritage Vehicles on display for the public to enjoy. The 'Heritage Transport' section has now been updated.
GWR Diesel Gala - July 2014
The 21st, 22nd July saw the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire Railway hold their popular Diesel Gala Weekend. The line now benefits from an extension to Laverton (soon to further extend to Broadway) making the line some 11 miles long. Two locomotives took centre stage at the event. Class 45 No.45149 appeared for the first time in BR Blue livery, and D7017 (visiting from the West Somerset Railway) provided a former locomotive type which would of operated over the route in British Rail days. The GWR has gone from strength to strength after it's long period of disruption caused by two major land slips at Chicken Curve and Gotherington. The periods of inactivity allowed other groups based on the line to concentrate on other projects, all of which have now come into fruition.
First Great Western (Loco Hauled) - July 2014
During the Summer of 2014, First Great Western introduced a Saturday's only Locomotive Hauled Diagram in order to release a Class 150 Unit from it's normal operations. The service uses day coaching stock from the overnight 'Night Rivera' service, the Mk3 coaches are a huge improvement in customer comfort, but the set does provide less seating than normal. On the 19th July I ventured into Cornwall to travel on board the 11:25 service from Par to Exeter. On the day of travel the set had been strengthen to four coaches rather than two or three. The train has been popular with passengers and enthusiasts, coupled with the summer holidays the additional coaching stock was certainly a welcome sight.
Swanage Railway '35th Anniversary Gala' - July 2014
The Swanage Railway held a mixed traffic gala to celebrate their 35th Anniversary of preserved operation. The line from Wareham to Swanage was closed by British Rail in January 1972 and the track had all been lifted by September of the same year. After much support from the residents of Swanage, where 83% of the town voted rebuild the railway in a referendum, access to the station buildings in Swanage was granted by 1976. By August 1979 the track had been relaid and the first heritage passenger trains were running again. Since 1979 the line has continued on its journey to recovery and expansion, by September 2014 its hoped passenger services will again be running to Wareham Station
RNAS Yeovilton Air Tattoo - July 2007
The 7th July 2007 saw RNAS Yeovilton hold their annual International Air Tattoo. The 2007 theme was 'Falklands to the Future'. Although there was a look back at the past, there was also a large section of the event dedicated to looking to the future roles for the Royal Navy. The event was in sunshine for most of the day and proved to be an amazing event with an explosive finish!
Dawlish Air Day - August 2007
The 2007 Dawlish Air Day took place amid poor weather conditions on the 18th August, but the cloudy weather didn't dampen the spirits of those who attended. I also arrived in time to see the morning arrival of the RAF Merlin from RAF Benson, the helicopter provided a rare chance to record something out of the ordinary in the classic Dawlish town.
Despite the early cloud the afternoon saw a little respite with the clouds breaking for the final display of the first ever RAF Typhoon to display at Dawlish.

Dawlish Air Day - August 2004
The 19th of August 2004, was the first time I attended Dawlish Air Day/ Carnival. As part of the Carnival Week in Dawlish on the Thursday, an Air Display was organised for holiday makers to enjoy. The event is unique because of its sea side setting allowing large area for spectators and dramatic cliffs for allowing for some spectacular displays. The 2004 event included: The Red Arrows, The Utterly Butterly Wingwalkers, and the Blue Eagles Helicopter Display Team to name a few!
Having never done this sort of photography before I was a little unsure of how the results would appear on screen. Keeping in mind that during 2004 I was only using a 6MP Canon 10D, which by modern comparisons is rather limited.

Gilze Rijen (Holland) Air Day - June 2005
On Saturday the 18th June 2005, Gilze Rijen (nr Tilberg in Holland) airbase opened it's doors to the public for a fantastic military air day. I was invited along with a group of experienced aircraft photographers to try my hand at something a little bit different!
Having already attended the Dawlish Air Day in 2004. I wasn't quite prepared for the experience of a full European Airshow Event. 350 images later I was somewhat amazed at just how much we have photographed in one day. This gallery details some of my more interesting shots, many thanks to Kev Wills for the invite!!

A Day in Wales - November 2011
Tuesday the 15th November promised to be a day of good light (according to the Met Office!), a trip to South Wales to record various freight and passenger movements was arranged. The day was quite busy with many of the booked freight flows running to time, we concentrated our efforts between Severn Tunnel Junction in the East, and Coedkernew in the West. With some reasonable spells of sunlight, the best light came in the final hour before sun down between 15:00 and 16:00. Below is a record of the days sightings. Coedkernew provided some nice Autumnal light with many differing colours from the lineside vegetation. Below is a selection of images from the day.
Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway Diesel Gala - October 2011
The Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway is a brilliant preserved line situated in the high in the Welsh Valleys with line gradients at 1 in 42 and up to 1 in 24 at one point on the line. The friendly atmosphere and enthusiastic spirit of volunteers on the line always make for a good day out. The 2011 Diesel Gala weekend saw 37216 (mid restoration), 37219 (Mainline Blue), D5627/31203 (BR Green) and 73128 (EWS) team up to provide multiple trips over the steeply graded line. The Thursday before the gala there were only two working diesel locomotives working on the line so great thanks should be extended to the volunteers who put in the effort to get the remaining two operational.
Severn Valley Railway Diesel Gala - October 2011
The Severn Valley Railway held their 4 day Diesel Gala between the 6th and 9th of October hosting a variety of traction for enthusiasts to enjoy. Rather than driving to the event, we opted for a full day of train travel via Brimingham New Street and Smethwick Galton Bridge on the way, and via Birmingham Moor Street (with a walk to New Street) on the way back. The Limited time at the event was not helped by the failure of 50031 on the 10:25 from Kidderminster to Bridgnorth, which failed near Northwood Halt delaying services by up to 45 minutes.
This gallery features images from the day, while not many lineside locations were able to be used we did at least make use of those we did visit.

London Underground Heritage Running - September 2011
Sunday September 11th 2011 provided the chance to travel over part of the London Underground network on heritage stock from the London Transport Museum. Heritage Tube Locomotive No.12 'Sarah Siddons' teamed up with Railfreight Grey 20227 to work shuttles between Harrow on the Hill and Amersham. While a balancing diagram used former Northern Line 1938 tube stock, painted in London Transport Red.
Services were slotted in-between normal tube trains running over the Metropolitan Line. The event was well attended and provided an excellent opportunity to view/ photograph all aspects of the London Underground operation of 'The Met'.
