Greater Anglia Revisited - April 2019
Two years after my first photographic feature in the Greater Anglia area I returned at the cusp of a complete fleet replacement on the Greater Anglia Franchise. The franchise has always used locomotive hauled intercity style trains for its long distance diagrams between London Liverpool Street and Norwich and then various British built units to cover branch lines and other core routes. However this is all about to change with the delivery of the new Stadler Bi-mode Class 720, 745 and 755 units which will see a complete fleet replacement right across the Greater Anglis Network. The 111 Class 720 'Aventra' unit will be built by Bombardier in Derby while the Class 745 and 755 'Flirt' units will be built by Stalder and include 20 electric 12-car intercity trains, and 38 bi-mode trains: 24 four-car and 14 three-car vehicles. My visit records a point in time as the new trains begin to be delivered and a look at the current operations in East Anglia.
My trip also coincided with the final weeks of the heritage locomotive hauled diagram using top and tail Class 37s and three DRS Mk2 coaches on services between Norwich, Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft. The locomotives have been a very popular addition to the Anglia operation, the locomotives have proved again that heritage traction can be a reliable alternative and has allowed Greater Anglia to deploy units elsewhere on the network. The Map below shows the area which I covered while in East Anglia using 3 in 7 day Anglia Plus Ticket using an add on fare to get to March from Ely.
