Manx Electric Tramway - Isle of Man
The Isle of Man Electric Railway date from the 1800s and travels 17 miles from Derby Castle (Douglas) to Ramsey via Laxey. The scenic beauty of the line hugging the cliff tops of the eastern face of the Island are the routes most endearing feature.
The operation is unique that it’s owned and operated by the Isle of Man Government and provides a vital transport link between the towns and small villages along the route. The route has been running for 125 years since 1893 and operates with Victorian & Edwardian era infrastructure and rolling stock, but with equipment in some cases having been modified or updated to suit modern regulations.
The line operates with a mixture of powered tram cars (sometimes solo) and un-powered trailers which are often towed to provide additional capacity for passengers. The line is popular with locals, holiday makers and is often booked for large groups.
