The Pier 43 Ferry Arch turned 100 years old in 2014. The Ferry Arch stands at the foot of Powell Street was built in 1915. It was where ferryboats docked, an embarkation point for passengers, autos, cargo and rail cars. Box cars of goods would begin their rail trip there by first crossing the Bay on ferry. It also is where prisoners bound for Alcatraz were put on ferry.
