West Midlands Metro
The West Midland Metro operates between Birmingham and Wolverhampton on a mixture of street tracks and dedicated rail tracks. The service is owned by Transport for West Midlands but operated by National Express. The line first opened in May 1999 using the former Birmingham Snow Hill to Wolverhampton Low Level lines. It originally terminated at Birmingham Snow Hill. However a recent plan of track/ network extensions has now bought the tram into the heart of Birmingham. Further investment and expansions have taken the tram network to Edgbaston (running on battery power from Grand Central). When the line first opened it used a fleet of 16 AnsaldoBreda T-69 Trams from Italy, but the recent upgrades to the route have sew a new fleet purchased and introduced. The line now operates a fleet of 21 CAF Urbos 3 trams, all of which carried a pink livery / branding. The total line length in 2017 was 13 miles. Further investment plans to triple the size of the tram network with £1.3 billion bounds being provided to link the Metro to serve Wolverhampton, Dudley, Brierly Hill, Digbeth, North Solihull, Birmingham Airport, Birmingham NEC and HS2.
